Margot Vanelter
Margot Vanelter
Margot always has her finger on the trigger, and her mind on a theory. She will be proved right in the end.

Personal history
As a teenager, Margot Morrin and her older brother Gob were conscripted into a battle to defend Tiefen, which had a profound effect on Margot. She was moved to action, believing that she had to learn more about the outside world if she was going to help protect Tiefen.
Margot becomes a fastidious letter writer, participating in correspondence courses until she reaches the age of majority, at which point no one can stop her from leaving.
Margot travels for some years with Key van Elder, a human artificer, serving as his apprentice. At times she would pin her ears back and pretend to be his young daughter. She found it quite helpful to be underestimated, and she never complained about paying children's fare.
After a few years, Margot and van Elder went their separate ways. She continued her travels and research, and encountered many of the troubles that drove single halflings back home.
Margot returned to Tiefen before her 30th birthday (perhaps a meaningful milestone for Halflings). Her mother's health is failing, Gob isn't the best worker, and the village's charity is wearing thin. Margot continues her research in a basement workshop, and writes letters to the connections she's made in the outside world. She spends more on mail in a month than the rest of her community spends in a year, but she makes a living for herself and her family. It's at this time she takes the alias Margot Vanelter. It's easier to publish her research with a human surname.
A threat is mounted against the halfings of Tiefen, more serious than ever before. Margot sources a firearm, planning to defend her home. The villagers are horrified. They believe that by bringing such a weapon into their enclave, she is an omen of terrible things to come. More iron and blood and gun powder should follow. And for the first time, Gob doesn't say a single word in her defence.
She returns home to find her workshop largely destroyed, her mother having opened the door to the angry villagers. Margot leaves Tiefen, and has avoided any news of what has happened to Tiefen in her absence. She doesn't care.
Education
Margot was the apprentice of Key van Elder for a number of years. She has also participated in multiple correspondence courses, and has had a couple papers published.
She is mostly interested in the creation of magical effects with mundane materials, trying to make the creation of artefacts cheaper and more accessible. She dreams of the day any parent with a needle and thread can stitch a protection sigil into a baby blanket.
Accomplishments & Achievements
Margot's paper about the diffusion of magical wool with mundane wool into thread has been cited over three dozen times.
Failures & Embarrassments
Margot hasn't spoken with her mother or her brother since leaving Tiefen. The uncertainty of their fates still eats at her.
Mental Trauma
Margot's workshop in Tiefen had been a sanctuary. She thought it was sacred, that no other creation could touch it. She can no longer trust any place or space.

Social
Contacts & Relations
Her mother is a widower, who had children late in life (perhaps after a failed relationship or two). She was the only woman of her generation to have fewer than 5 (10?) children.
Her older brother is named Gob. He's a nice guy, although with strange ideas. He's also very fond of Felorijuanna. When they were children, he often defended Margot from the derision of others.
Mannerisms
She has quick eyes, always sizing up her surroundings. She's the sort who never sits with her back to the door. People usually describe her as twitchy.
Speech
She speaks quickly, and often uses turn of phrase that are common to Tiefen.
