Eifelian

Time-Displaced Mutants

The world is ending, or at least it was, or I guess it will be? In any case, the Eifelians have seen it and took great measures to avoid it.   The Eifelians are a race of genetically modified time-displaced elven mutants. To avoid the end of existence in the future they traveled far to the past. In an effort to adapt to prehistoric life, a ritual was conducted called "The Change". However, things didn't go according to plan and once they'd arrived in the past, the elves realized the horrible mutants they'd become. It was for over 1000 years of Devonian life before the Viridian Veil reappeared on Ghaile in the early 200's AM. Hopefully, the Eifelians adapt to their new surroundings and find a home for themselves.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Eifelians are commonly of humanoid form though they've been known to undergo mutations that cause the growth of additional limbs, or even transforming limbs into tentacles.

Biological Traits

The following stats are intended for Pathfinder 1e

Ability Scores

+2 Constitution, +2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma. Eifelians are adaptable and descendants of extremely intelligent beings. But they're extremely offputting.

Size

Eifelians are medium creatures and have no bonuses or penalties due to size.

Type

Eifelians are Fey with the elf and aquatic subtypes.

Base Speed

Eifelians have a base speed of 30 feet and a swim speed of 20 feet.

Languages

Darfellans begin play speaking Devonian and Elven.

Other

Amphibious: Eifelians can breathe air and water.   Creepy: An Eifelian's mottled and unnatural appearance can elicit unease in others. Non-Eifelian humanoids take a -1 penalty on all saving throws against spells or other effects Eifelians cast that cause confusion or fear. In addition, Eifelians gain a +2 racial bonus on Intimidate checks.   Elven Immunities: Eifelians are immune to magic sleep effects and gain a +2 racial saving throw bonus against enchantment spells and effects.   Keen Senses: Eifelians receive a +2 racial bonus on Perception checks.   Low-Light Vision: Eifelians can see twice as far as humans in areas of dim light.   Mutations: Eifelians are mutated far beyond their original elven forms. At character creation, Eifelians gain 4 mutation points. These mutation points are used to purchase mutations from this list. Each mutation costs 1 mutation point and unless otherwise stated, they cannot be selected more than once. An Eifelian need not spend all of their creation points at first level. If they wish, as a full-round action that provokes an attack of opportunity, an Eifelian may spend any amount of remaining mutation points. The Eifelian then gains the chosen mutations. Once the choice of mutations is made, it cannot be changed.

Genetics and Reproduction

During the Change the Eifelians dramatically changed their biology. By channeling aquatic ley lines, they were able to force their natural evolutionary systems to engage and trigger a permanent transformation after birth. The Eifelians now possess traits similar to many aquatic plant and animal species found all over the world.   Due to tampering with the transformation ritual, these traits generate randomly and are completely unpredictable between parent and offspring. These random traits often lead to strange or even horrifying figures barely resembling their beautiful ancestors.   Some Eifelians have embraced the change and the magic that brought it about. These elves have discovered ways of channeling the ley energy left dormant in their system and are capable of using it to trigger radical transformations. These powerful mages and warriors are known as Mutomancers.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Either during the Change or over the course of their time in the Viridian Veil, Eifelians have evolved an increased reliance on meat and have even developed the ability to eat it raw with no side effects.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Tethys by Rachel
Eifelians come in a wide variety of colors and shapes. The most common facial characteristics of Eifelians include a lack of hair, scales, slit pupils, and pointed ears. Some have been seen sporting frills, fins, exotic colored hair, and even cuttlefish-like eyes.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Well over 90% of Eifelians are found within the Viridian Veil where they finally feel at home. Within the Veil, Eifelians can be found in the largest numbers on the island of Eifelia.   A smaller group makes home on Roada Isle. These elves are much more secluded and hold negative opinions on the other races in the veil and especially the other elves.   As with many other Devonian races, Eifelians can be found on Asselia where they live together with the other folk. Here, they often serve as healers, scholars, and farmers.   Outside the veil, Eifelians can often be found in underwater coastal societies. They rarely find a home on the surface probably due to their offputting appearance.

Average Intelligence

Eifelians are descendants of some of the smartest elves of their time. As such, their knowledge has been passed down through the generations producing a smarter than average population.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Eifelians largely possess the same sensory capabilities of their elven ancestors. Some have been known to mutate other abilities such as echolocation and the ability to see in darkness.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

Following the Change, the newly mutated elves were horrified with the results. The former Oniri took responsibility and explained they'd tampered with the transformation ritual. They were exiled and forced to find a way on their own.   Over the coming years, for one reason or another, many other elves were exiled and found their way to the former Oniri seeking refuge. The Oniri welcomed all and slowly learned that each elven tribe had done some form of tampering with the ritual.   The two groups grew, and after a few centuries the non-exiled became known as Eifelians and the exiled were called the Emsians. Eventually, it had become accepted that each tribe had tampered with the Change and they were all to blame. Repulsion of their new forms slowly turned to acceptance.   However, the Emsians were still not welcome on Eifelian land and largely treated as unfavorable criminals. A small war broke out between the groups. The war ended after only a few years, but tensions remained for centuries. When the Viridian Veil appeared in modern times, and the Frasnians demanded allegiance and magic from the Eifelians, the Emsians had been totally reabsorbed. Their newfound time period would serve as a bridge between the groups. Now when one speaks of the Emsians, it's in remembrance of those that came before and fought for truth and equality with their lives.

History

Near the end of the Age of Ashmedei, as the forces of A.R.M.O.R. and the Domiax were gearing up for the Battle at the End of Time, a large group of elves gathered to discuss the future of their species. They had seen the end of the High Elves years before and decided that they needed a drastic plan if elf-kind were to survive to oncoming calamity. Many solutions were proposed including leaving the planet, leaving the plane, and leaving the system. All of these were shut down as the elves slowly realized that there was nowhere in the entire 3rd-dimension that they could escape to. A group of secretive wizards stepped forth claiming to be chronomancers, masters of time-magic. These mages proposed that perhaps there was nowhere in the current dimension they could go to, but they could avoid the problem by traveling back in time.
Master Biomancer by Willian Murai
The elven leaders ignored the idea, manipulating time was a fool's errand. Surely such a radical idea wouldn't work. With time running out, it became exactly what they turned to. The elves decided that they would fund the chronomancers project. The time-mages idea was to create a massive veil surrounding a chain of islands. This veil would displace anything within to a set period in the distant past.   The elves decided that they would be sent extremely far back in time, around 400 million years. This would land them in a whole new world devoid of any land-dwelling sentient life. The elves would be able to populate Ghaile and all the other planes hundreds of millions of years before they even showed up in the timeline.   The elven scholars noted how different the world was 400 million years in the past. Much of the world was covered in ocean and it was incredibly hot. The elven scientists and mages began a side project, one that would allow their biology to adapt perfectly to their new home. They would channel a huge amount of aquatic ley energy into their bodies and forcibly initiate their advanced evolution systems. Little did they all know that the ritual had been tampered with.   When the day came for the time-traveling ritual to begin, the elves initiated their evolution experiment they dubbed "The Change". In an instant, their forms were mutated, drawing energy from all over the ocean, mixing the elves' DNA with that of all kinds of marine plant and animal species. Waking in their new prehistoric world, the elves found their bodies horribly transfigured. Where once stood beautiful fey beings, now stood hideous monsters. What once were elves, now were Eifelians.

As with most elves, Eifelians can find it difficult to put on weight or large amounts of muscle. Some Eifelians do inherit such traits from creatures such as whales, though these are the exception.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Eifelians are as varied as the seas themselves. They most often come in shades of green or blue, but are also known to come in vibrant reds, yellows, and purples. Some sport iridescent scales or even glow in the dark.   Chromatophores have been evolved in some Eifelians, allowing them to change their color and even texture to blend in with their environment.
Related Ethnicities
Eifelian Half-Elves
Though rare, Eifelians have been known to have offspring with humans. These Half-Eifelians share traits from both of their parents. They often look more human-like in appearance with maybe a small amount of Eifelian mutations thrown in. These can range from electrical abilities, spines, acid spit, and much more.   In Devonia, these Half-Elves are commonly known as Silurians due to their homeland, the island of Siluria. These creatures can find it difficult to be bond with Eifelians due to their, by comparison, short lifespans. They fair slightly better in human regions where their unique abilities prove useful and sometimes envious. This admiration can often instead lead to distrust and fear if the Silurian happens to take after their elven heritage's appearance.   The following stats are intended for Pathfinder 1e

Ability Scores:

Silurians receive a +2 bonus to any ability score of their choice to represent their varied nature.

Size:

Silurians are medium creatures and thus have no bonuses or penalties due to size.

Type:

Silurians are humanoids with the aquatic, elf, and human subtypes.

Base Speed:

Silurians have a base speed of 30 feet and a swim speed of 20 feet.

Languages:

Silurians begin play speaking Devonian and Elven.

Other:

Adaptability: Silurians gain Skill Focus as a bonus feat at first level.   Elven Immunities: Eifelians are immune to magic sleep effects and gain a +2 racial saving throw bonus against enchantment spells and effects.   Keen Senses: Silurians receive a +2 racial bonus on Perception checks.   Low-Light Vision: Silurians can see twice as far as humans in areas of dim light.   Mutations: Silurians share some of the genetic mutations of their elven heritage. At character creation, Silurians gain 2 mutation points. These mutation points are used to purchase mutations from this list. Each mutation costs 1 mutation point and unless otherwise stated, they cannot be selected more than once. A Silurian need not spend all of their creation points at first level. If they wish, as a full-round action that provokes an attack of opportunity, a Silurian may spend any amount of remaining mutation points. The Silurian then gains the chosen mutations. Once the choice of mutations is made, it cannot be changed.

Author's Notes

The Eifelian Elves were originally created by Alluria Publishing in their book Cerulean Seas: the Viridian Veil. If you have the money, please consider supporting them, their work is amazing. I still recommend it even if you don't play Pathfinder 1e.   What do you guys think of this strange race? Do you have any questions or comments? I'd definitely love to hear them!
