Kingdom of Karanya (Cah-rahn-yah)
The home country of the main crew of characters, this blended cultural community prides itself on learning to focus on itself more and on useless wars less...by increasingly isolating themselves from Western powers and being very choosy with who they do business with. It's a haven for Jews, a sanctuary for twice-married Kachataran women, the (somewhat secret) home of a growing number of refugees from various places, and a cultural hub for musicians, artists, tradespeople, and traditionalists. They'll swear till the corcrabuqs come home that they are devout followers of the Church of the Sacred Flame, by majority, but it's actually a blend of "pagan" and "Yeshuan" traditions, melding seamlessly together. Do they have a lot of socioeconomic issues to work out? Yes. But they'll tell you that they still have a better set up than most Civilisian civilizations AND they haven't collapsed into civil war in centuries, thank you very much.

History
Karanya started out as a rather unproductive region of greater Waskascia, with fishing towns dotting the coast and the rivers. While these natives did contribute to the economy, they mostly kept to themselves, and Waskascia's government revolved around Wawel and Warsawa, in modern day central Karanya, then northern Waskascia. After the Venice expedition, the Tumanchev had invaded, and after "Bloody Bella" had her reign, the region spent time as a quiet duchy trying to be as unobtrusive as possible lest the government try to put more direct control over them. At the death of the last Piast, Karanya had gained enough power to take control by diplomatic instead of militaristic means. After the fall of Varangia, they absorbed that region, and strengthened their limited isolationist policies after Zewhal started its grand quest for world dominance.
