The Sejm of Karanya (Say-em of Kah-rah-nee-yah)

The Legislative Branch of the Karanyan government is as complex as the people of Karanya are. At times controlled by a nasty witch, at times striving for more inclusive immigration policies, and the rest of the time arguing about taxes, the Sejm of this kingdom was once part of the Sejm of Waskacia (which is based on Poland) but is influenced Josun (Korea-influenced) and Huanjin (China-influenced) as well as more minor influences from the Italic states (Italy-influenced), Stephonia (Austria-Hungary and Turkic peoples), and Cilitzia (fantasy Czechoslovakia). They love to claim that they are direct descendants from the Tumanchev via Josun and dress up daily as if that empire is still prominent. But! They do run an effective government.

Structure

Generally, the schlacta believe that they are the best equipped to govern and take this very seriously. There is one representative from each province unless a specific province is trying to make a case for getting a law passed or more resources for the region, in which case more representation for that province are brought in. Almost everyone in this group have some connection to the greater royal family - some sibling of a past king or queen married in and now they have a gene somewhere in there. They interact with the different trade guilds and devise plans for international affairs as well as domestic ones for issues that affect multiple provinces. A simple majority vote is required to pass any measure.

Culture

They are fond of dressing in something roughly approximating a grand combo of Turkic, Korean, and Polish clothing. Rich embroidery, furs, and robes are a must - they actually prefer it to cravats and breeches. Every family has a color and symbol and everyone woman - about half the council is female - wears a scarf that highlights what family she's from.

Nice article! I liked the references to the real-world cultures, since it helped me visualize things easier.

If you're seeing this, I may have used your article for my 2024 Reading Challenge.
