Session I: The Battle of Recks
General Summary
Following their expulsion from Absalom, in very unfair circumstances, the party bounced from places to place in Avistan. They soon found that the influence of the Primarch extends far. Sooner or later they were pressured to leave every place they attempted to settle. From doing odd jobs they made a little coin, but due to the speed at which they had to leave they lost everything but what they could carry. Eventually, whilst in Northern Garund they realised to truly be able to settle again they would have to travel to those nations with worse relations with Absalom. Fortunately, they met captain Cobham Omen, who would carry them to the borders of the Shackles.
It is here we join our party, as the disembark from his ship onto the docks at Recks, known as the last safe port of Garund. This is a small village, on the edge of the Sodden Lands, which is the last dock before the Free Captain's dominion. Because of this, the villagers scrape a living through the few trade caravans who defy the Captains in this area, and by growing what they can in the hostile Sodden soil.
On disembarking, the party was advised to head towards the town square, where they may be able to find work with a caravan. As they walk the narrow road to the square, a commotion breaks out ahead. The party bravely charged forward to see what was going on. As they burst out of an alley into the square, they saw a figure in heavy armour lying in a pool of their own blood, and a hoard of zombies cornering a priest of Besmara. After a long fight, the party managed to defeat the zombies, and were told the truth. The town had had undead hanging around for a few weeks, but had never attacked the town.
The party was asked to investigate the source of the undead by the mayor and the priest. After trekking into the swampy wilderness of the Sodden Lands (and avoiding a brief incident with quicksand), the party followed the trail back to a cave. Within the cave, they saw several zombies, stood stock still. Suddenly, one was consumed by a gelatinous cube. Following the hazardous battle, in which much of the party was paralyzed, the cube was eventually defeated. In the cave the party found a wealth of items, including necromantic scrolls. The only sign of any previous inhabitant of this cave was a pile of rags, which had been contained in the cube, upon which was a symbol of a crown on a background of a sun. None of the party recognised the symbol.
And so, with the investigation inconclusive, the party returned to Recks, to see if anyone there had any knowledge of the symbol...
