Recks
A village of about 560 people, located on the Western Coast of Garund. The settlement lies just North of the border of the Shackles. Known as the last safe port of Garund, it contains a small dock where a few traders who defy the Free Captains and their terror of the seas can import or export goods.
The town was founded by the survivors of Free Captain raids on their ships, after they washed up and were stranded on Garund. Many have not taken well to the change of lifestyle, and life is hard. Monster attacks from the Sodden Lands are common, and the salt in the soil of the town makes it difficult to grow crops there. The settlement carves out a tough life, in a hostile environment, but in the words of many of its inhabitants "it's better than dying".
The odd nature of the settlement means its population is largely men who lived their lives at sea, although there are a few women, either refugees from the Sodden Lands or the Shackles, or the few women aboard the raided ships. Due to the fact that many of the men have worked hard labour throughout their life, the town is considered rather well protected, as it is full of strong, rough characters.
Unknown to most, this status quo is maintained by an agreement between the mayor and the Free Captains, where the town provides money to the Captains in exchange for them to not attack ships bound for or from Recks. In exchange, the Free Captains provide a small amount of protection to the village when it is in need.
Demographics
Largely men, and largely poor. Most of the inhabitants are human, and were sailors before being shipwrecked.
Government
The only government is the mayor, Orest Karlsson. He was the captain of the first founders of Recks, and many trust his judgement (though he is not a politician). There are no elections, but the mayor rules for the good of the village, as he would be quickly deposed otherwise.
Defences
The defenses are mostly the townsfolk. As strong and fit young sailors, they form an intimidating defense against many threats. The nearby presence of the Free Captain's territory seems to also deter many attackers, lest they incur the Free Captains' wrath.
Industry & Trade
The settlement is largely self-sufficient farmers. The few caravans that utilise the port bring most of the money to the settlement, with the village charging heavy taxes. This is still preferable to attempting to parlay with the Free Captains, so many traders still choose to take on this tax.
Infrastructure
Largely wooden shacks, often rather-well built with the wood present in the surrounding land. There is also some evidence of the remains of the ships which brought the inhabitants here. Though not in disrepair, most building show signs of damp and wood-rot, evidence of the hostile environment in which they are built.
History
The settlement has existed for a few years, there are few native residents, with most of the population made up of shipwrecked sailors. There are a few other refugees, mostly those fleeing either the Free Captains' territory, or survivors of the Sodden Lands. In AR 4719, a large undead attack on the village represents the only major conflict here. This attack was investigated by a party of adventurers who coincidentally arrived on the same day, and helped drive off the undead. The results of the investigation were inconclusive.
