Purpose
Archeologists, where they may be working, are researchers that focus on the discovery and examination of ancient ruins and artifacts found there. While the research they do may not be as in-depth as those done by a specialized researcher the initial findings and careful excavation of ruins are of importance.
Social Status
Most in the world outside of research and scholarly pursuits may not be aware that archeologists exist at all with many in the world of research itself viewing the field as a dying pursuit.

In almost all cases archeologists must gain permission from the local area if they wish to examine a ruin or dig for a believed site, permission is either from the area's ruler or overseer.
