Hobgoblin

Hobgoblins are not a race, they are a legion. Their iron bootheels have marched over all the continents of the world, occasionally as mercenaries but more often as an empire dedicated to their god. With red skin, yellow eyes and sharp teeth they have ingrained themselves in the cultural memories of just about all cultures. In spite of the common perception of them as warlike, barbaric and savage, hobgoblins are honorable, disciplined and cultured. Many of their subjects have found them to be fair, if strict, rulers and their empires are orderly and internally harmonious.
In The Gold Empire they are treated as second-class citizens as punishment for their sins during the Hobgoblin rebellion. As part of this discrimination they are forced to live in the Wasteland and are only allowed to leave as mercenaries of the Gold Empire, a job many of them are forced to take in order to be given food, protection and relatively good land to live in. Hobgoblins who don't aggree with this order live their lives as bandits, mercenaries and criminals in the Gold Empire, as no other options are open to them.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Hobgoblins conform to the humanoid standard, with two arms, two legs and a head attached to a central torso. Their skin are shades of red and their eyes tend to be yellow or brown. Hobgoblins are as a rule tall and muscular, though this is more likely due to milennia of selective breeding and the culling of weak progeny.
It is difficult to tell the difference between male and female hobgoblins, especially when clad in armor, as they both tend to wear their dark hair long, and female hobgoblins lack the mammae of other humanoids, preferring to feed blood and milk from cows to their young.

Genetics and Reproduction

Hobgoblins reproduce in the manner of most other humanoids, though they have some interesting quirks to their genetics that Green Alchemists have elucidated through the study of hobgoblin warbands in the Wasteland. In particular, it seems that hobgoblin females are capable of carrying children with all other humanoids, though they never produce halfbreeds, only true hobgoblins. The rationale for this may be to enable a hobgoblin legion to quickly replenish its numbers while maintaining genetic diversity, even should they lose many of their males in battle.
A hobgoblin fetus ideally has to gestate for 8 months, but in times where the mother must be ready for war, she can induce birth quickly and safely after 4 months. The child will be smaller than ideal and may never grow to full stature, but will still be a valued member of the legion. Such children are more often culled should they fail to reach the standards set by their tyrant god.

Growth Rate & Stages

Hobgoblins reach maturity at 15 years of age, and generally live to be around 80 years old.
