Atrophy Wharf
Purpose / Function
Atrophy Wharf was originally a key administrative and legal center for a thriving coastal town. The mansion served as a courthouse, prison, and administrative building. After the town fell into the water due to the freezing and coastline collapse, the mansion became an isolated, haunted relic of its former self. Today, it stands as a mysterious, abandoned site with a reputation for strange magical occurrences and eerie phenomena. It is now a location of interest for adventurers, scholars, and those seeking to uncover the truth behind its haunting.
Alterations
- Degradation: The mansion and docks are heavily rotted and weathered from exposure to the elements. Wooden structures are warped, cracked, and infested with mold and rot. The docks have partially sunk into the water, and their remains are barely visible.
- Magical Disturbances: The area is plagued by magical anomalies, such as floating lights, sudden temperature drops, and unpredictable bursts of arcane energy. The mansion occasionally flickers between dimensions, making it hard to track its exact location or entry points.
- Enchanted Residue: Residual magical effects from past events linger, causing strange phenomena like whispers in the wind, ghostly apparitions, and occasional bursts of wild magic that can alter reality within the vicinity.
Architecture
Mansion: Once an imposing structure of stone and wood, the mansion is now a crumbling edifice with ivy-covered walls and a sagging roof. The architecture features a blend of Gothic and classical elements, with arched windows, weather-beaten statues, and broken columns. The once-grand entrance is now a twisted, half-collapsed doorway.
Docks: The docks are barely recognizable, with rotting wooden planks and rusted iron supports. The surrounding water is murky and filled with debris. The remains of old warehouses and storage buildings are partially submerged or collapsing.
Defenses
Arcane Traps: The mansion may be protected by magical traps set by its previous inhabitants or an unseen force. These could include illusions, wards that trigger magical effects, or enchanted guardians.
Unseen Guardians: Some believe that invisible or ethereal creatures protect the mansion or that the mansion itself has developed sentient defenses. Ghostly apparitions and phantasmal entities may deter intruders.
Environmental Hazards: The rotting structure poses physical dangers, such as collapsing floors and unstable walkways. The surrounding waters can be treacherous, with shifting ice and sudden whirlpools.
History
Atrophy Wharf was once a prosperous town known for its bustling port and administrative importance. The mansion, situated on the outskirts, served as a central hub for legal and governmental activities. When the great freeze struck and the coastline collapsed, the town was submerged, leaving only the mansion standing in isolation. Over time, the mansion succumbed to decay and the docks were rebuilt with scraps of rusted iron and rotting wood. The area became known for its eerie, supernatural occurrences. Legends emerged of a mad mage or cursed entity inhabiting the mansion, but no concrete evidence has ever been found to confirm these tales.
