Muckward

Muckward is a small, isolated village situated in a vast swamp. The entire settlement is constructed on stilts, allowing the buildings and walkways to rest just above the murky waters. Originally established as a military outpost, Muckward has since evolved into a modest community primarily inhabited by humans. Despite its small size, the village faces significant external threats and tensions with the nearby wood elf tribe from Yantalos. Mysterious, floating lights believed to be spirits or magical manifestations appear over the water at night, guiding travelers or leading them astray. Periods of unnatural silence that descend upon the swamp, often preceding the appearance of the centipede demon or its offspring.

Government

Muckward operates under a simple, community-based governance structure. A village council, consisting of elected representatives from the key districts, oversees the day-to-day administration and addresses any issues that arise. The council works closely with the village elder, who acts as an advisor and mediator, ensuring the community's needs are met and maintaining harmony within Muckward.

Industry & Trade

The economy of Muckward revolves around fishing, foraging, and small-scale agriculture. The villagers rely on the swamp's resources for sustenance and trade, with fish, herbs, and handcrafted goods being the primary commodities. Trade with passing merchants and occasional interactions with neighboring settlements provide additional economic support.

Districts

The Stilted Quarter:   The heart of Muckward, where most of the residential buildings and essential services are located. Elevated walkways connect the homes, shops, and communal areas.   The Outpost Remnants:   The oldest part of the village, containing the original military structures now repurposed for civilian use. Includes storage facilities, a watchtower, and a small barracks now used for communal gatherings.   The Swamp Edge:   The outskirts of Muckward, where the village meets the open swamp. Primarily used for fishing, foraging, and interacting with traders who navigate the waterways.

History

Muckward's history dates back to its origins as a military outpost established to monitor and protect the region. Over time, as the need for a military presence waned, the outpost transformed into a civilian settlement. The village has grown gradually, attracting settlers who sought a simple life away from the bustle of larger towns and cities. What was once thriving ended up taking some of the corruption from the moon elf incident years ago that desolated the land to form the Charred Lands and the settlement slowly began to sink, creating the swamp.

Points of interest

The Watchtower: A remnant of Muckward's military past, offering panoramic views of the surrounding swamp and acting as a lookout point for potential threats.   The Eldertree: A massive, ancient tree that stands at the edge of the village, serving as a meeting place and symbol of Muckward's resilience.

Geography

Muckward lies deep within a sprawling swamp, surrounded by stagnant waters, dense vegetation, and a labyrinth of winding waterways. The village itself is elevated on wooden stilts, with interconnecting walkways providing access between buildings. To the west, lies the ancient forest of Yantalos, creating a natural boundary between the human settlement and the territory of the wood elves.

Natural Resources

Muckward's swamp is teeming with life, both mundane and magical. The flora includes towering mangroves, luminescent fungi, and a variety of aquatic plants. Fauna ranges from fish, amphibians, and reptiles to more exotic creatures such as giant dragonflies and swamp elementals. The centipede demon and its offspring are the most feared inhabitants, posing a constant threat to both Muckward and the wood elves.
