Porthca - City of the Last Lantern
High in the Northern snowy mountains lies the city of Porthca and the last worshippers of the Lantern King.
(Religion check) The Lantern King is one of the Eldest, a divine fey creature of tremendous power said to be able to reshape the very fabric of the First World on a whim. He is known for his capacity as a trickster god mixing caprice and mischief in a god-like capacity within a realm already full of such practice. His sense of humor is vast, both in its breadth and potential for harm, and his pranks, even well-intentioned ones, are not always pleasant or convenient.
(History Check) Not many travels to Porthca due to its remote and harsh conditions; most are either esteemed followers of the lantern king or people that are attempting to escape to a remote location to live out their lives. The townsfolk of Porthca look after their own and do not take kindly to strangers for they do not know what trouble or problems new people would bring. The town (much like its chaotic deity) uses common law and although there is a lawmaker here named Sole Velo, the people tend to look after their own and will apply their own form of justice where necessary. For more violent crimes, the law master is brought in. In order to permanently live here inhabitants must seek the promise of the mountains and survive in the wilderness and make a pilgrimage to the mountains to prove themselves. Should they make their way to the temple of the lantern king and receive his blessing, then they will be accepted with open arms into the community.
The town is surrounded by mountains and snow and is isolated within its own valley. The inhabitants range from mostly human and dwarven with a few others sprinkled in. Large stone pillars mark the entrance of the town and large troughs have been dug and reinforced for moving water out. The streets have a slight slant to them which end with massive gutters and troughs for funneling water through. This is what gives the city its allure as there are four lanterns in each of the main districts. Minlops Hills, Sunlane, the Central Plaza, and Far Tower all have large, lanterns atop a huge metal pole that burn with a bright foot-wide ball of golden light surrounded by a circlet made from glyphs, and the lanterns themselves are forged of iron and metal cases with no glass in them. These large lanterns produce a magical heat that keeps most of the city warm during the day and slowly flickers to a purple hue at night which allows for snowfall and ice to form once again. Typically, throughout most of the town, it is a warm spring day except for meat village which lies on the outside of the magical heat barrier. Although most people do not live in meat village, there are residents there that manage the meat markets and iron works there as the cooler temperatures make those environments much more manageable. Other various shops exist around the town ranging from traders, armor, and weapon smiths that can create rare (but expensive) rainbow metal weapons and armor. The name is derived from the extensive heating and cooling process that gives the metalwork a rainbow hue to it. Also located in town are the dwarven dragon smiths that create their own wonderous items from the remains of dragons. Twice a year they make a journey to the Well of Dragons to pay their respects to the creatures and recycle the remains into mythical artifacts, weapons, and armor containing dragon bone, scales, fangs, claws, and even the remnants of the souls of the departed dragons. One of the more prominent attractions within the town is a large stone building with dwarven runes carved into the door and window frames. The inside of the tavern is decorated with elven-style furniture and the large rooms contain server beds and large woolen mattresses. The Axe of Lightning is the name of the establishment and above the mantle sits a large axe that crackles with lightning energy. The innkeeper is an old male halfling named Waltin who used to be an alchemist in his younger years and is sometimes visited by powerful wizards and sorcerers for assistance, information, and knowledge. Outside of the town (but protected by the lanterns), the remnants of the Lantern King patrol the area at night. These zombified creatures have no eyes and hunt by sound and are a almost translucent color to blend in with the surrounding area. A last guise and trick of the lantern king for these creatures to protect his city from outsiders.
