The Tower of Light

"Home of the Custodians..."

In the heart of Varuumae Corona, the only building larger than the palace of the Grand Hassir is the twisting spire of The Tower of Light, home to the "keepers of all knowledge," the Custodians. As old as the city itself (perhaps even older), the tower contains the largest library in all the west, and possibly the entire world.   All active members of The Custodial Order live and work within the tower, and they rarely venture forth from its walls. Because of this, there's no accurate census of their membership, though it's believed that their current number clocks in around 300 Custodians. Even such menial labor as janitorial work is performed by acolytes or students preparing to enter the order.   The tower is accessible to outsiders by invitation only. Even the Grand Hassir and his personal guard are subject to this rule. Further, no book is allowed to be removed from the tower (or even the floor its kept on), except for in extreme situations, and with the express permission of the Head of the Order (The Head Gnostic or Bibliognost).   Other features of the tower include the "royal" teleportation circle, for quick transport to places unknown (to all but a very select few). It is also said that at least several divine magical items (taken from Celene) are housed within the tower.   Custodial students take their final indoctrination test in the tower, the nature of which is known only to those within the order. There are no witnesses to the test, nor do the takers ever speak of its particulars.   The Tower of Light also houses the Grand Custodial Court, where all matters, including crimes, that require judgement are adjudicated. The Custodians are a self-ruled micro-nation unto themselves, and their own law even supersedes the king's law, even on matters of life and death. It is rumored that one level of the tower holds a magical execution chamber, used to carry out Custodial justice (between members of the Custodians, never outsiders).
