Beth Heralds
Beth Heralds is one of the main characters of ASCOMYCOTA. She is a Ghost who works as a secretary for Leon Mildew. She is a very work-motivated person who uses her abilities as a ghost to complete any task she finds important.
Before her death, Beth was an office worker alongside Miranda Mere. She is from about the 1990s to the mid 2000s.
Social
Family Ties
Beth has no known family. However, she considers Leon to be a father or grandfather-like figure, even though the two aren't related by blood.
Beth's name was just a random choice (by the author), but it posthumously references the word 'bethel', meaning 'hallowed ground'--consider how ghosts like Beth are drawn to Hallowed Haven.
Beth's surname, Heralds, is more obviously a reference to the word 'herald', which is someone who carries important news. Sometimes the word is also associated with harbingers and fortunes, as well as angels. This is mostly a reference to why Beth is a ghost--she has important news, thoughts, and warnings associated with her former job and life. In universe, Beth jokes that her surname is why she can write difficult emails.

Her surname could also be an allusion to the Psychopomps she and Avan meet in The Corridor. Beth relies a lot on her intuition and personal moral compass, and she is at first hesitant to enter the Corridor because she feels something is wrong or that someone is watching them. Both feelings end up being true, but by facing the Corridor, Beth and Avan grow closer and more understanding of their deaths.
