Session 18: Cleanup Detail
General Summary
The party, hearts in their throats, began inspecting and interrogating the versions of themselves in the chairs, becoming increasingly desperate for the truth until Nemara cast a magical Suggestion on chair-Vin, suggesting she tell the truth about how long she'd been there.
When Vin-in-the-Chair told them she'd been down there for days, since she first came to Greyhawk and was attacked by Doppelgangers who were copying her family, Lins decided to take a chance and fire her crossbow at Standing-Vin. But before she could fire, Standing-Vin stepped behind Nemara and grappled her in a surprisingly strong headlock.
"If you make one more move," she said, "I'll break her fucking neck."
The room erupted into chaos - all the doubles in the chairs except the real Vin broke their false bonds and began attacking their real counterparts. Sigvurd leapt to the real Vin's defense, fighting off his own double while Lins fired after Fake Vin, who was retreating with her hostage to another room. Lins fired bolt after bolt into the monster wearing her friend's face, until it fell in a heap behind the shaken Warlock.
Now outnumbering the copies, the party finished off all but one, who Sigvurrd tied up fr questioning. The real Vin helped their interrogation by reading the creatures mind, and they learned that the doppelgangers were working for a Mind Flayer called Xyrxog.
Badly beaten and slightly traumatized, the gang retreated out of the dungeon, where they found the dead body of Ilya Moonrae, whose neck Fake Vin had snapped when no one was looking. They carried her body into the thin dawn light, where the city guard arrested them for breaking and entering.
When the guard tried to notify Ms. Moorae's parents of the tragedy however, they found Ilya alive and well in the family manor. Appalled and confused, they decided to investigate the party's claims of shapeshifters, and let them help as payment for their minor offence.
Timeline
13th of Wealsun, 595 CY
- 12:40 AM: The party faces off with their doubles, leaving one alive to interrogate.
- 1:40 AM: The party completes a short rest and interrogates the surviving doppelganger, learning of its Mind Flayer boss.
- 1:50 AM: The party flees the dungeon and finds Ilya's body. They are seen by a civillian opening the warehouse door and reported to the Night Watchmen.
- 2:00 AM: The Night Watchmen hold the party at their Guildstation.
- 2:30 AM: The City Guard picks up the party and takes them into custody.
- 8:00 AM: City Guard officials go to deliver news of Ilya Moonrae's death to her parents, but are startled to find Ilya alive and well at home.
- 10:00 AM: The coroner reconfirms the identity of Ilya's body. One of the arresting guards repeats the party's claims of doppelgangers beneath the old warehouse.
- 11:00 AM: The party is offered a deal: They will be released if they perform some community service, helping the guard investigate the Sodden Hold.
