General Summary
The party returned to the Sodden Hold with a company of guards:
- Sergei, elf, Captain
- Ilmindel, elf
- Renee, Elf
- Marta, human
- Kirin, Dwarf
They made their way into the lower chambers, and found the water room newly occupied by an octopus! It dragged some of them under but Sigvurd cut them free by cleaving the tentacles, turning it into a Quadropod before he killed it.
The guards followed by ladder, and they narrowsly avoided a scythe trap thanks to Lins' scouting. Exploring further, they found an office full of paper evidence implicating the doppelgangers' infiltrations of various powerful guilds and factions throughout the city. When Sergei started ordering his guards to take it all back to the guardhouse, Vin became suspicious and read his mind. She discovered that he was a doppelganger, and combat broke out! Sigvrud brought him down in one hit and another guard clapped him in irons.
Vin devised a test to prove he was a doppelganger, cutting off some of their hair. Since doppelgangers are hairless, the illusion faded as soon as it was detached. Renee resisted, and the party became suspicious. Vin read her mind and saw her panicking, but when she pressed the point, Ilmindel leapt to her defense. They criticized the elf's appearance and hair hygeine, to his shock, until Lins managed to get behind him and cut off part of his hair, which promptly vanished. Marta was finally persuaded to test herself, and though she covered the act with her hands, she did produce a tuft of hair afterword.
Ilmindel was declared a dopplyboy and combat broke out again! When the dust cleared, only Sergei was left, barely clinging to consiousness. Sigvurd knocked him out to expose his true form, and this persuaded the remaining guards. They excused themselves so they didn't have to watch while Sigvurd crushed the unconscious creature's skull, and they took some time to rest and for Vin to commit the evidence to memory over the next two hours.
Timeline
13th of Wealsun, 595 CYp
- 11:30 AM: The party, accompanied by five guards, reenters the Sodden Hold.
- 11:45 AM: The party, in the secret offices below the warehouse, become suspicious of their guard companions and begin testing for doppelgangers. Combat breaks out.
- 12:00 PM: With Sergei, Ilmindel, and Renee dead, the party starts memorizing the evidence in the office.
