Session 36: The Whale Incident
General Summary
The party decided Raknian had gotten away with these heinous acts long enough. They were convinced he had murdered Ekaym's sister, Lahaka, that the evil cleric was living below his palace with his permission, and they knew already that he had purchased the scrolls which summoned the ulgurstasta, and paid Zyrxog for their lives. Enough was enough.
The party split up, using Telepathy to communicate. Vin wheeled overhead as an owl, while Lins and Nemara, invisible and light-footed, snuck in via the basement while Sigvurd stood watch at their entry point. Zeke was tired and decided to sleep in the coenoby.
At first, the infiltration went well. Lins and Nemara deftly avoided guards and snooped through the palace's lower chambers. But things took a turn when they went upstairs. They quickly found Raknian's bedchamber and, confident in their invisibility, stepped inside.
Instantly, Raknian sat upright and began calling for guards, assuring them somone was in the room. Guards began swarming in from the palace's attached towers, and even invisible as they were, they began to worry about their odds.
Vin offered to help, and the party accepted in haste. So Vin flew as high as she could, and then polymorphed again... into a whale.
The huge marine mammal descended on Raknian's palace, easily absorbing the damage in its bulk as it splintered half the upper floor, turning the guards in Raknian's chamber to paste while Raknian himself survived by a luck of the debris and his own resillience, but began to suffocate.
The crash woke Zeke up, and from his room, he began pulling his armor on even as he ran to the scene. Some security guards saw him, but didn't have time to block the bulky paladin's path, so ignored him for the moment.
When the guards, bewhildered and panicked, began attacking the whale AND the barbarous dwarf who had just dashed up from his post at the basement door, Vin returned to her human form and began shooting fire and flame at the guards who were swarming her friends. Sigvurd tried to grapple Raknian, without luck, and a moment later, Zeke pushed through the rubble with some guards.
Upon seeing the party, the guards realized Zeke was with them. The party was reunited, but utterly surrounded, with more arena security as well as the Greyhawk Guard pouring in from all sides.
