Session 5: Tomb Stories
General Summary
The party decided to take care of a few errands in town before heading to the observatory and headed to the library to get their magic items identified by the local wizard, Allustan.
Allustan was delighted to have some locals interested in arcane knowledge and mentioned that he was also suspicious of Balabar Smenks recent activities. He knew the mine manager and his goons were up to something, he just didnt know what. He asked the party if they would be willing to share any information they got and warned them that Filge was unhinged and dangerous and surrounded by undead servants. Nemara hastily asked him to look after her son the owlbear cub as they left.
The party broke down the cellar door and had a brief scuffle with a disgusting construct before plunging ahead. They attended a sycophantic dinner party with some zombies and found three of the Lands family skeletons in the antechamber, where one of them felled Vin with a crossbow bolt through the chest!
The party retreated to the dining table to try and help the wizard recover, and after an hour through wound dressing and healing potions she managed to recover consciousness. The party trooped upstairs to look for the last skeleton, and found themselves in an egotistical nightmare of a bedroom, where Vin nicked the wizards entire spellbook and Nemara found a note in the nightstand. The note was from SMenk, asking Filge to come and study a worm hed stolen from some cultists in the Dourstone mine, who were apparently raising an army of unkillable zombies in preparation for the Age of Worms.
While she read this, Sigvurd messed with a suspicious looking mummy in a suit. He toppled it over with his glaive and the severed head it was holding began to scream. Soon the party was attacked by three lumbering zombies armed with huge weapons. Sigvurd took down their leader but not before two others flanked him. The party launched salvo after salvo of arrows and magical attacks while Sigvurd swung his glaive, but it took them several rounds to fell the undead warriors.
When the sounds of battle died down, Filges last servant, the skeleton of young Gertia Lands, appeared in the stairway and shortly after, Filge himself.
Filge gave up the skeleton easily and protested his ignorance on the grounds of being a refined and scholarly gentleman, blaming everything on Balabar. The party fibbed about his missing spellbook and retreated.
Back in town, they found Allustan polymorphed into an owlbear and communicating with Nemaras new pet. He informed them that the animal called itself Blathers, and that it was fine to stay with them so long as it was fed. He gave Nemara a book on owlbears and listened interestedly to their account of Filges residence, disgusted but unsurprised at the necromancers behaviour.
Allustan offered to employ the party to investigate the cult activity. Hes certain this Ebon Triad is the darkness that Balabar and his friends have gotten mixed up in, and that their presence in Diamond Lake cannot possibly end well. He thinks they must have uncovered some ruins under the mine, and asked to meet the party for lunch next day to discuss a plan.
In the interim, the party headed back to the Lands farmstead, buried the bones, and hurried back to the Whispering Cairn, where they found the door to the Tue Tomb of Zosciel ajar, its treasures waiting beyond.
