The Night Watchmen

The Guild of Nightwatchmen is a privately funded body providing a variety of static security, street patrol, and escort services to the people of Greyhawk City. Their reputation as forthright protectors makes them extremely popular with the locals and extremely hated by those with illicit plans for their area.   The Guild has no power of arrest, but can detain criminals at the site of the crime until the City Watch arrives. They have special dispensation from Greyhawk's oligarchy to carry their weapons openly on the streets. They can be hired by any private individual as bodyguards, static security, patrolmen, or similar help.   Guild members wear armour - most typically chain or half-plate - and a sky-blue tabard with the sigil of St. Cuthbert emblazoned upon it. They also wear hats of the same sky-blue shade with white feathers in their bands.

Function

Guildmembers hold a military rank equivalent to Constable in their dealings with the City Watch, and have various ranks in their dealings with the People's Army of Greyhawk. Night Watchmen duties include patrolling, static guard, and assisting Greyhawk's citizenry after sundown.

Core Tenets

The Guild is a lawful organization, and has four guiding principles.
  • Opponents of Evil. The guild is not dedicated against any specific faction, region, or other group. It simply seeks to protect people against any foe who appears.
  • Servants of the Saint. The guild is closely aligned with the Curch of St. Cuthbert, and while members do not need to join the church, followers of Evil deities such as Luz or Vecna must renounce their faith before joining this blessed order.
  • Protectors of All. The guild does not discriminate among those it protects. From the highest lord to the lowest stablehand, the Night Watchmen will provide a protecting light.
  • Armed by Order. Discipline is important to this guild. St. Cuthbert's clergy preach common sense, honesty, and adherence to the law, and this dogma is echoed in the Night Watchmen.

Hierarchy

Despite the name, any gender or species may join the guild. However, all Initiates must clear a background check. New members are not compelled to join the church of St. Cuthbert, but those in active service of an evil entity or criminal organization are not admissible. In addition to the sigil of St. Cuthbert, guildmembers wear a badge indicating their rank, worn on the left breast or left shoulder.
