Naia Caeli
They are the sacred Night Wardens, and the speakers for the many Aelgari gods and goddesses. Look upon them and see their power, their might, but also their freedom. A child's eyes see the all that one could ever want, independence, power and nobility that erases one's humble upbringing.
Career
Qualifications
Naia Caeli are still the most elite fighters of the country. To qualify, one must win the tournament of the Day of Zajan. This is a fighting tournament that is almost like a holiday in the Aelgari Empire.
Career Progression
Generally one must first be a knight before one becomes a Naia Caeli. While the position of Night Warden is one of the most prestigious fighting positions, there is an even more elite group that a Naia Caeli might qualify for- the elite Night Warden guard of the Empress.
Payment & Reimbursement
Pay is high, mostly not supplied from superiors, but from peasants and townspeople hoping that the Night Warden will commune with the gods in their favor. There is also some corruption, but a great deal less than that within the knights.
Other Benefits
Being a Naia Caeli is as prestigious as a fighter can get. They are considered sacred and to be voices of the deities, so they have large amounts of influence. They are also feared for their fighting prowess.
Perception
Purpose
Their job is to police and protect the people, to spread Aelgari culture and to convert people. They also are tasked with protecting the Empress. However, their role does not include protecting other nobles- that is left to the nobles' knights.
Social Status
It is a high position, almost on level with nobles, but separate. They have high regard of the Empress, but also are generally well-regarded by the common people. Only nobles resent their position that allows for immunity from the social order that the nobles are comfortably placed at the top of.
Demographics
This is an extreme minority of elite fighters, with maybe fifty Night Wardens in a large city.
History
The Night Wardens, or Naia Caeli, were originally a group of elite fighters who protected the first Empress of the Aelgari Empire. Later, they expanded and formed the Order of the Naia Caeli, which protected trade and worked to eliminate crime within the Aelgari Empire.
Operations
Tools
They wear beaded helmets in the shapes of birds of prey, and horns emerge from the back. Each helmet is personalized for the guard, so one guard might have an eagle with kudu horns and another might have a cassowary with eland horns. Their equipment and armor has a goodly amount of gold in it to indicate their power and godliness. Weapons are just as varied as helmets, but are usually traditional Aelgari weapons, like poison blow darts, claw-like brass knuckles, curved swords, etc.
Workplace
Naia Caeli are almost always mobile, traveling by horse, keeping their armor, tent, weapons and armor cleaning tools with them. While their nobility would never be questioned, their cleanliness definitely is. Their is almost always a slight odor of sweat and cleaning oil.
Dangers & Hazards
It is not as dangerous a job as a soldier, but Naia Caeli are expected to be willing to die for the Empress and routinely diffuse or take control of extremely dangerous situations.
