Faeries Species in Halcyon | World Anvil

Faeries

Faeries are a semi-sentient, mischievous, woodland species. They are humanoid in form, due to convergent evolution. They walk in ways reminiscent of woodland fauna, and change quickly between biped and quadruped movement. Many have wings (of both insect and avian types). Winged faeries are able to fly, and they tend to have birdlike behaviors, such as swarming like starlings (murmuration).

Culture

Faeries read sentient beings' emotions through apparent empathy. They respond to intense emotions with a seeming curiosity, but this response is entirely triggered by pheromones. They tend to have more insect-like thinking and motivations, which causes them to respond to emotions in ways that are incongruous with the emotional context. This leads to a dark reputation. Their culture is social, tribal and hedonistic. They are able to fashion simple clothes, tools, herbal medicines, and weapons.

Pest Control

Faeries are largely magic-proof, but are susceptible to swatting and pesticides. Tribes of faerie often invade human settlements near inhabited woodland, preferring to infest chimneys and crawlspaces. Faeries are notoriously difficult to remove from a human settlement once they become established, as they have gradually adapted to pest control practices. Infestations are often left untreated due to difficulty in removal. A buildup of faerie powder, a powdery lubricant that falls from the wings, is known to cause random magical effects when inhaled.

Chimney Faeries

A tribe of chimney faeries may number in the hundreds, and are a common pest bordering magical woodlands. Chimney faeries have behaviors to similar to chimney swifts. They enter their chimney in the evenings after feeding on insects, entering together in a single funnel-shaped formation following their queen. They are known to torment pets and children with defensive magic in defense of their chimney, and are notorious for throwing loud, drunken parties late into the night.

Training

Some faeries can be trained. Notably, trained faeries are used by the Wizard Tow service, as a means of transporting drunken wizards.
