Clan Manuhel

The Clan of Furthest Dawn, some call them. The Manuhels are an ancient and powerful selkie family with immense systemic power in the distant seas of the selkie periphery: in Maradia, Suneka,  Inahng, Stildane, and Nafena. Clan Manuhel is the only clan to hold three Viceroyships (regional fleet commands) at once, and is immensely popular among the furthest fleets. Manuhel leads one of the most prominent factions of selkies in The Khilaia , with substantial power in the Motosui Assembly.   As a Khilaian Faction: The Manuhel are a family that has risen and fallen and risen again, with a long history of glory and infamy alike. They have strong connections to the fringe fleets, freebooters, and the dubiously legal. The Manuhel are deeply into old religion and fresh markets, and subsidize explorers, cartographers, and translators. The Manuhel also support crew autonomy; they often support crews over treaties, and envision the Khilaia as more of a consensual meeting space than a government. The mapmakers, whalers, glassblowers, and local-oriented guilds side with Manuhel.   The Khilaian factional representative is Kelahel Manuhel, the Rowdy Idealist. Kelahel is an old man with a soul of fire, driven to keep the Clan forever tied to its basic ideals of freedom and non-interference. He founded the Libteraine Party, a faction devoted entirely to divesting the Khilaia of power, and has refused coalition offers from the other parties despite having little support among the bigwigs for his own. He is a loud, angry, zealous man who loves attention and gains great satisfaction when he causes problems in politics (which he considers innately corrupt and tyrannical). His intensely stubborn political positions have allowed him to make connections among pirates and organized crime, though he doesn't actually support either and gets quite angry if he sees clear evidence of either practice.   The Manuhel's extreme emphasis on bravery and bold risk-taking has led to them having an exaggerated influence on the Selkie Circle of Elders.   As Naval Royalty: Clan Manuhel derives a great deal of its power from its three Viceroyalties: in Suneka(location:492ab4f9-fa36-47d1-934e-e5b88549cf0b), in @[Maradia, and in Inahng. They encourage great autonomy and freedom among their fleets, entering minimalistic treaties to give their lesser maximum freedom. They encourage exploration and investment, and run some truly exceptional trade lines across largely disunified or dangerous territory. They embrace bravery and bravado, though they also crave stability and consistency - it is quite the difficult task, sustaining such a broad network of influence.   The Manuhel Viceroys include:
  • Tupua Manuhel, Viceroy of Suneka, a Nostalgic Explorer who has sacrificed profits for expansion in her perpetual race Eastward, to chart the long tropics around connecting Suneka and Maradia by coastline. Tupua craves to become a selkie elder and explorer legend, and has also waged her own war on the Elder Leviathan known as Elder Night, who has proven to be the scourge of the open oceans there. She is generally supportive of the Sunekan religious authorities, an important element of her success.
  • Hunula Manuhel, Viceroy of Maradia, the Enigmatic Magician. Hunula is a scholar, educated by the Selkie Loremasters and by Maradian tutors, as well as a wizard with contacts to the Darzan University. Intrigue absolutely eludes her conceptually, as she is a very direct and blunt person. She tends to keep to herself and is not fond of sharing information. She has gained a great deal of local respect among Maradian religious leaders, an essential tool of hers.
  • Gezma Manuhel, Viceroy of Inahng, is the Rowdy Firebrand who fought her way into the position she is today. An explorer with a history of some piracy, Gezma does as she pleases. It is this stubborn pragmatism, paired with her loyal crew inspired by her libertarianism, that enabled her to chart and extort treaties and trade routes across Southern Inahng. Her personality puts her at odds with the local Empire of Calazen, who sees her as a natural ally of their piratical enemies in the Kingdom of Shirmarsa.
As a Dynasty: Clan Manuhel is an eccentric clan that embraces sycretecism: many religions and cultures have influenced their families. To keep the family unified, there is an extreme Hamekun traditionalism throughout the clan. The Old Gods are kept prominently displayed and venerated, and ship priests within the clan are given respect and deference. Many children of the clan are educated as if for the Hanahai, and there is a well-above-average knowledge among clanmembers of the old rituals and ceremonies. They also tend to push their youngsters towards "making a name for themselves" in ways that can be glorious, but can also be quite foolish or even lethal.   Some minor members of Clan Manuhel include:
  • Mipala Manuhel, head of the Manuhel Trading House. A raucous partier and master of great feasts, known as the friendly face in the Khilaian Isles. A fellow idealist with deep connections.
  • Kimalai Maunhel, Matron of the Estates who manages the family estates, mutual funds, and communications. Known as a huntress, athlete, and sportswoman who is all too happy to manage the Samvaran estates where she can surf, hunt, and do a stable job.
Clan Manuhel has estates all around the world, but most prominently in the city of Dahaka in the March Kingdom of Arashoka. Dahaka is the closest port to the actual Khilaian Isles, and Clan Manuhel's firm local power has long been a source of strength and persistency for the clan.
