Sophan was born to the imperial princess of the kingdom of Basaya and a merchant-sorcerer consort father. He was a rambunctious and curious child who was ignored by his parents and largely given over to a priestess of Kamada, who encouraged him to explore beyond the palace walls. Throughout his childhood, he would explore the towns and cities of Basaya, and the upsetting reality of unequal standards of living found there. He envisioned himself a paladin, but never had the finesse to succeed in swordfighting. Uncertain where he wanted to go with his life, he found inspiration when he saw a traveling imperial judge holding court for a corrupt local sheriff. He decided he would be a paladin of the pen, not the sword.
He began learning law and sorcery under an imperial tutor, and excelled in his studies. He was a rapid learner and very charismatic, good at law and magic both. At age 27, he finally became an imperial judge and worked as a judge until 35. He was content in this position until he was shaken suddenly out of it by his mother's politics. Long having been looked over, he was suddenly chosen as heir to princedom of Basaya after his older half-brother was caught and imprisoned in a political conspiracy. That year, his mother abdicated and he took it upon himself to begin drafting legal reform. This did not go as planned. He faced constant opposition, implementation was slow, and every solution seemed to drudge up more problems. His rock-the-boat attitude began costing him allies, and he understood that without a support base he would soon be dislodged from power. To build a power base without compromising his ideals, he began hosting balls for other reform-minded sorcerers and providing them positions throughout Basaya.
At one of these balls, he met the funniest woman of his life: Dragonlancer-general Siriba of Echereko. Having avoided the tricky politics of relationships entirely, he went all-in on this spur-of-the-moment courtship. She was receptive, and offered to join his court if he joined her on a campaign in the Eastern plains. He agreed, and they married two years later. But on that campaign he discovered something: the absolute power and authority of military leadership. It was intoxicating and cathartic after years of trudging bureaucracy, and he began studying military magic and technology as a hobby with Siriba.
It was ultimately his military hobby that drew the attention of the Dragon Court in Sagrena. He and Siriba participated in the Second Esedetan War in 1991- only a year into their marriage- because news of his military interest had reached the Empress by chance and he was selected as an officer. As a powerful sorcerer married to a brilliant tactician, he was able to fight well and lead competently. The success of his army earned him much high praise, and when the war ended in 1993 the empress kept a close eye on him. His continued interest in magic, war, and law earned him more and more visits to the Dragon Court and he was deemed the most competent possible successor by reigning empress Dariva Eramzir of Karema. In 1998 she named Sophan her heir and handed him the throne in 2000.
His reign has since been marked by legal reform, military reform and buildup, economic success, and a more decentralized attitude towards imperial policy. He has taken the unusual step of breaking up monopolistic families deemed to be exploiting their family privileges, and reigned in the corporations somewhat. The rivalry and war with Esedeta has been quite a distraction, however, and the grudge with Esedeta has slowly consumed his focus.
