Caventoca
Caventoca is an independent island kingdom in the Coricut Sea.
Structure
Leaders in Caventoca are chosen by sorition using a pool of candidates for each position that is offered from the people of Lillicata. Any name can be added to the pool and the more names a candidate recieves the more likely they are to be drawn. However, the random nature of the draw always leaves room for what the Caventocan's would call "the luck of the sea" to choose instead.
Culture
While many live in various villas across the island, nearly all of the population is concentrated in the capital city of Lillicata. Those who live outside the city are often fishers, pearl divers, hunters, and trappers. The Caventocans possess many superstitious beliefs about the island and the surrounding sea most of which are light-hearted and used as an excuse to continue cultural rituals. Tolerant of other religions, most Caventocans don't place much emphasis on religion but may occasionally pray to the sea beast, Murmurak, the Rune-Tide Rime.
Caventocans value independence, especially in their area of expertise; often they develop a trade over generations. Given the values of mutual respect, there is rarely competition among Caventocans to edge out another in a similar craft or trade. This is in part due to the general treacherousness of the island. Each family has cultivated a necessary knowledge of the land and sea needed to survive and thus is usually the only ones capable of safely harvesting, hunting, or exploring that area.
Magic is unusual in Caventoca, and though the locals are well aware of its existence, they would politely refer that casters use magic out of their sight.
