Wolf Pup

At age 12, each child of the Lupuorum family is gifted a wolf pup. Raising the wolf is intended to teach the child responsibility and the importance of kinship. This bond is crucial, as the wolf will aid the child during the Rite of the Wolf. While it is common for the wolf to perish during the rite, there are rare instances where they survive.

Rite of the Wolf

At age 15, every member of the Lupuorum family must undergo the Rite of the Wolf. This takes place in an arena known as “The Den,” a sprawling forested area covering two square miles. The child is provided only a knife, their pet wolf, and nothing else before being released into the arena with three wild wolves. To survive, the child must either emerge with three wolf pelts or die trying. The rite, lasting anywhere from 1 to 3 days, serves as a brutal lesson in pack tactics and physical strength.   The reward for surviving this trial is a direwolf pup, raised by the victor to serve as their mount in future battles. These direwolves, enhanced over centuries by blood mages, grow larger and more formidable than ordinary direwolves.   The pelts of the slain wolves are crafted into a single Lupuorum cloak by the family’s artificers. These cloaks, enchanted to function similarly to a cloak of protection, serve as a unique identifier of the victor as a member of the Lupuorum family. Each cloak is distinct to its owner and is destroyed as part of the funeral rites upon their death.   The victor of the Rite of the Wolf is publicly recognized as a true member of the Lupuorum family. This rite is also mandatory for any adopted family members, though they are not given a wolf to assist them.
