Babylon

A very shallow pyramid of mostly windowless cells. Many small branching aqueducts feed individual fountains and herb and fruit planters nestled into wallsides and terraces. Cafeterias, lecture halls, libraries, bathhouses, workshops and playgrounds are distributed within. Lighting is enhanced by cleverly placed faceted lenses and polished mirrors made of beetle cases.   Visible by kilometers around, they frame the surrounding landmarks and inspire safety in the minds of residents. The grand entrance is a flat, wide opening grilled with decorative columns. Braziers and censors offset the cool breeze that emanates within the entry halls. Those lead to interior lobbies and on to staircases, ropelifts and slideways that access the deeper amenities.

Purpose / Function

A centralized living space naturally grew from a necessity to stay close together. Frequent sudden sandstorms, high daytime temperatures and vicious wildlife prompted this collaboration.

Alterations

Technologically purpose built rooms were scrapped and converted to multipurpose rooms as replacement materials disappeared. Certain cavernous underground chambers still contain the rusting hulks of unknown machinery.

Architecture

A gentle slope dominates the artistic shape of the greater overall figure. The entry colonnade features fluted columns with simple pedestals carved of a richly veined marble. Interior elements bear a utilitarian elegance, are simple yet carefully carved.

Defenses

The building can cloister up with thick sliding doors made from a petrified leather. Spears and arrows may be used from the many crenelated terrace lookouts surrounding the perimeter.

History

The structure was planned in 98 and completed in its current form in 127. The interior structures predate the planning phase, centralized on the existing town hall structure. The outer pyramid was slowly cast and set above existing buildings as a thick shell as the population grew.
