The long lady
The long lady was a torture device constructed in the barbaric West to instill fear and misery amongst witnesses. It was a punishment reserved mainly for heretics and political prisoners. The term "going down the lady" meant one was to be tortured with this device.
Stored in the dungeons of pious cities, this device resembled a statue of a woman with a dour expression, with crossed hands at her chest in a symbol of repentance. It was in fact, a hollow container larger than a person, hinged along its back so that it could be fully opened, and also with an opening at both the top and bottom. A prisoner would be loosely bound, then lowered into the hollow figure headfirst through the hole at the top. As the prisoner struggled to free themselves, they would become lodged further down inside the vessel. Through the bottom hole, they could see a basin of water placed there. Then they were left in this state for several days as they began to dehydrate and try to struggle through the impossibly small hole at the figure's bottom. After about a week the prisoner would certainly expire, at which point executioners would remove the body for disposal. The device was frequently left with the excrement and blood of the previous prisoners to enhance the depravity.
These devices are considered barbaric by most of the civilized settlements of Haven, and are explicitly banned in those.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
The vessel is simply a conical structure with some inner deviations designed to provide an ever-constricting trap for victims who are lowered in from above.
History
The device was imagined by dark priests who would intoxicate themselves and perform ritual slaughter of prisoners. They dreamed of a way to amplify the suffering of their most hated prisoners in a less hands-on way.
