Races of Heimland: Drekkin
The Drekkin (meaning "Lizard-Folk") are a race of Heimland that originated from large lizards exposed to nuclear radiation left behind by an atomic-bomb once used by the Old Folk on Raginwald to annihilate their enemies, the Surakh.
After the atomic-bomb lay waste to most of the land, the remaining survivors evolved to fit in with the harsh conditions and eventually morphed into the Drekkin after 600 years of evolution.
A unique feature of the Drekkin are their rubbery wings, a result of the mutations of the radioactive bomb. Although some Drekkin are unable to use their wings (due to deformities at birth) others can fly from city to city with ease, and are normally elected as leaders of a Drekkin tribe, since wings are a point of pride in Drekkin society whether they work or not. The bigger your wings, the bigger your status in the tribe. Wingless Drekkin are subservient slaves, underlings working for the Tsar and his queen.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Drekkin are reptilian humanoids with scaled skin and snake-like heads. They possess limited magical abilities, the most common of which is the use of illusion to disguise themselves as nearly human. They are physically shorter in height than humans and have numerous lizard-like traits. Their skin is brownish-green and scaly, often decorated with body paint which becomes more elaborate in higher-ranking individuals. Their eyes are segmented like a chameleon's and they possess nictitating-membranes, since they lack eyelids. They have serpentine tongues that "taste" the air and lack tear-ducts. Though they have a characteristic reptilian dislike of low temperatures, they are warm blooded and live up in the snowy mountains close to Surakhnit and Indagar. Their wrist-bones can pivot both ways, meaning they can rotate their wrists a full 360 degrees, due having two bones in their upper-arms and one in their lower-arms. Their rib-cages are composed of 650 small bones knitting together like latticework.
Biological Traits
Being formed from the magical nuclear-waste of the Old Folk, the Drekkin have hypnotic-gazes and lethal venomous bites, as well as terrible crushing strength. They have claws and their bodies and heads are covered with plates of various sizes. They can swim, but prefer flying. Drekkin have small reptilian wings, a result of mutation, which they can sometimes use to fly short distances. The wings are flaps of skin stretched over exposed ribs, like a flying-squirrel.
Genetics and Reproduction
Drekkin are seasonal breeders, and reproduce once a year at a specific time when females enter the "birthing" period. Although they look after the children, the males play no part in the raising of young. That's a job for the women. Changelings, as they are better known, are born with an egg-tooth akin to chickens, and are essentially miniature versions of the adults.
Growth Rate & Stages
Changelings crave attention, but will instinctively avoid larger entities. At the age of 3 months, changelings become predatory in nature and have to be taught not to attack their own kind. Due to their considerably greater physiological development and self-reliance at birth, cases of surviving feral children are much more common in Drekkin society.
Ecology and Habitats
The Drekkin dwell atop Raginwald, a mountain-range turned into a mass of black jagged mountains and cliffs after Big-Bahama lay waste to it. Situated a few miles from Indagar and Surakhnit, Raginwald separates the two sections of Heimland and acts as a "middle ground" for no-man's land. Raginwald is freezing and covered in snow, a result of the nuclear-winter brought on by Big-Bahama.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Though primarily carnivorous, as shown by their specialized teeth, the Drekkin can consume vegetation. They can also drink and process alcoholic beverages, and most prefer malted drinks like chiffery (a sweet beverage composed of ale, barley, oats, chocolate, milk, tea-leaves, coffee-beans and cinnamon) and Milo, an invention of the Old Folk that is still produced at dairy-farms.
Biological Cycle
A Drekkin's life-cycle lasts 60 years; first they are an egg (taking 2 weeks), then a changeling (turning into juveniles after 2 years) then juveniles (turning into teens after 4 years) then teens (turning into adults after 14 years) then adults (dying after 40 years).
Additional Information
Social Structure
The main social structure is divided among Tsars (kings), priests and citizens.
Facial characteristics
Serpentine in appearance, akin to humanoid cobras.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Raginwald, in Heimland
Average Intelligence
Greater than that of a common person, but still equivalent to Bronze-Age cavemen.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Drekkin have 18 long fingers (four index-fingers, two middle-fingers, eight ring-fingers, one little-finger and three opposable thumbs which close inward) on each hand. Their hands are perfect tools, with their plams being extra-sensitive to pick up on vibrations in the wind and alert them if anything is coming near. Their feet have two large toes pointing forward (to sense heat), and two smaller ones pointing to the rear (to sense cold). Their mouths have sharp, yellow-orange teeth, and they can smell objects from 2 miles away. Their eyes are mounted atop short, muscular stalks like snails. The stalks are constantly moving, and at times almost seem to be moving independently of each other; this is why they can see four times the distance of any other race on Heimland.
Civilization and Culture
Major Language Groups and Dialects
Dreb, one of the six languages of the forests.
History
When the Old Folk were in conflict with the Yea'haa'weh for land, the Drekkin were still normal reptilian creatures. But then the Surakh started to attack the settlements of the Old Folk, leading to them dropping the atomic-bomb known as Big-Bahama. The end of the war left much of the world devastated and devoid of much life. The infrastructure that had existed throughout the land had been mostly destroyed. The little infrastructure that survived, such as bridges and office-buildings, now lay in ruin. Evidence of the war appear in the form of abandoned military vehicles, ruined army blockades, bombed buildings and crashed warplanes. A great deal of Old Folk technology, such as radios and rifles, also remained scattered throughout the land. Abandoned and destroyed vehicles were a common sight in the devastated landscape and their rusting skeletal remains could be seen everywhere.
Scientific Name
Reptilia-Varanus-Sapiens
Origin/Ancestry
Reptiles
Lifespan
60 years
Average Height
1.3 m
Average Weight
90 kg
Average Length
3 m (from head to tail)
4 m (their wingspan)
Average Physique
Due to being created from radiation, Drekkin are often slow and as such require small weapons such as daggers and swords to strike faster. On average they will fight like a common man.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Drekkin paint themselves with colors of brown, blue, green, black and white. These are mainly for camouflage, but also serve decorative purposes.
