Nilar Das (Nee-lar Dahs)
Most of the great walking cities were destroyed by Ra or by his forces, but not all. Such was the case for Nilar Das. The city managed to escape the initial purges Ra lead against the walking cities, but eventually it couldn’t maintain itself and collapsed upon the Atlantean Viaducts. The upper portions of the city were livable, for the time being, but most of the locomotion system had been completely run down. Interestingly, the city could have been repaired, but it wasn’t for two key reasons. Firstly, they believed Ra was already nearby and any time spent repairing Nilar Das was more time for his forces to arrive. Secondly, Nilar Das had pioneered many advances in vehicular travel and as such, had many, many vehicles for the populace to use to flee the city. And so it was that the population of Nilar Das left their city to rot as they escaped on their vehicles, many of whole would still be tragically caught by their pursuer.
So the city has sat mostly empty in the time since. Some travelers who may be desperate on their trip across the bridge may attempt to scavenge what they can from the city and perhaps even live there for a period of time, none remain. This could, hopefully, be the result of these travelers moving along their journey. However, it is just as likely to be result of their own demise, either from the hands of wild life that has moved in to inhabit the city or the numerous gangs of bandits that patrol the area.
For those brave and desperate enough to make the trip into the city, they may just be rewarded. The city had a functioning bio lab for farming. While most of the crops have become overrun, some have thrived in their current environment thanks to the climate, the somewhat still functional lab equipment, and the natural pollination from the local fauna. However, anyone not particularly well versed in agriculture should only use this as a food source if things are dire. Many of the plants that were originally grown here were done so for medicinal purposes and without proper treatment can be poisonous to many of Venus’ species.
Perhaps what Nilar Das is best known for is the thing that led to its abandonment: it’s pioneering of vehicles. While the city was active, many other walking cities would trade Nilar Das for their vehicles. These include the gyro-cycles that were scavenged by the local bandits, flying machine prototypes that predate the manumoku, and even a few under sea vehicles. While many of these were all cutting edge, the majority of them fell into Ra’s hands when the citizens fled the city. All the same, enterprising merchants still hire teams of mercenaries to explore the research and development labs, hoping to find a new, undiscovered prototype.
