The Viaduct Communities

When the Viaduct was planned, it was know that there would need to be supply stations in between the various bridges in the event of a catastrophic break down or plague that would wipe out a food supply. If supply stations only existed at the beginning and end of the viaduct, it could take weeks before help arrived and by then it would be too late. So they determined that as they already had to construct artificial islands to help support the four bridges, it only made sense for them to make more supply communities on these islands. As such, Alphus, Rhon, and Zeta were founded.   Originally each base was established to fulfill both its own needs and the reasonable needs of any city that needed assistance while crossing the bridge. This included smelteries to replace any broken parts that the city may need from replacement legs to engine parts. There were also greenhouses capable of providing staple grains and vegetables until a city could recover. Also, in a worse case scenario, each base has enough rooms to facilitate a quarantine in the case of plague. However, that was long ago and now the bases have seen better days.   Alphus, the base on the island nearest to Nibiru, is the settlement that still has the largest permanent population. Only a fraction of the smeltery and the greenhouse are still functioning, but since they were originally large enough to supply whole cities, they are enough to where the city can survive on its own without need for trade. As such, Alphus can be a popular spot for people to disappear to for a while, should they find themselves in trouble.   Rust City, formally called Rhon, is a misnomer as it is not particularly rusty nor is it a city. Even if it isn’t rusty, it is in an incredible state of disrepair. It can’t be helped though, as in centuries past, a plague hit the base and the majority of the population was wiped out. Few still remain, living a hard life, trying to trade for supplies with whatever they can manage. It’s only true resource is it’s isolation, which in gives it priceless safety.   Zeta is the last stop of the line, being on the island closest to Kumari, and is the base that seems best suited for the current state of the world. The smelteries of the city have been put to extensive work to build high and thick walls to protect it from the nearby gyro-raiders. It is an isolated society, requiring tribute to enter the city. However, except in matters of necessary trade, the citizens of the base rarely leave themselves.
