Kitamari Ryuketsu (キタマリ リュケツ Ki-ta-ma-ri Ryu-ke-tsu)
Kitamari was born and raised in the countryside just outside of Tokyo, in Kamakura (Kanagawa Prefecture), Japan. She is of mixed heritage, with a Japanese mother and a British father, making her half-Japanese and half-British. Throughout her childhood, Kitamari was largely unaware of her father’s occupation. However, she frequently noticed his absence and his interactions with what seemed to be government officials and businesspeople, who would arrive in expensive cars.
She attended public school during her youth and graduated with honors. Kitamari then pursued her passion for animals by studying veterinary medicine at the University of Tokyo, where she completed a five-year program. During her time at university, her parents divorced, with her father’s career taking precedence over his family. Kitamari observed her father becoming increasingly distant as their lifestyle grew more affluent, which heightened her mother’s concerns and ultimately led to the divorce.
After an accident at the factory where Kitamari's mother worked, her health deteriorated, requiring extended hospitalization. Following the divorce, her father returned to the United Kingdom, abandoning Kitamari and leaving her to care for her mother alone. Without financial support or stable housing, they faced severe hardship. A year after the divorce, when Kitamari was 24, her mother passed away, leaving her the modest home she grew up in and very little money.
Kitamari struggled to secure employment as a veterinarian, partly due to discrimination against her mixed-race background. To make ends meet, she took on odd jobs at convenience stores and local cafés. However, the grief over her mother’s death caused her to lose these jobs, and by the age of 26, she lost her home and became homeless.
For six months, Kitamari wandered the streets of Japan, searching for stability. During this time, she connected with the homeless community in Kamurocho, where she found support and shelter. One rainy day, while she sat cold and shivering in her wet clothes, a man and his dog approached her. The man, dressed in a tropical outfit, offered her an umbrella, a place to stay, and a sense of belonging. Initially skeptical, Kitamari, with nowhere else to turn, noticed the man’s dog was healthy and lively, which reassured her. She decided to trust him and eventually joined the Hidora Clan, finding a new purpose and sense of direction.
