Dreem
"Who would have guesses that these strangely large insects from the Palm Coast would be so incredibly useful?" - A Dwarven Silk Farmer
Basic Information
Anatomy
Large, multi-limbed caterpillar like insects.
Biological Traits
Due to their diet of toxic Velek bush, they have few natural predators once they reach maturity. However, young hatchlings are often the favorite prey of birds and reptiles.
Growth Rate & Stages
Dreem usually hatch, shed their skin, and lay a clutch of eggs within their first year. After this the creature continues to grow and live for an additional 2 - 5 years.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Dreem eat vast quantities of Velek, a highly toxic bush that grows abundantly and rapidly, but only in the warm jungles of the Palm Coast.
Biological Cycle
Dreem are hatched from the nests in late spring (usually Tse or Eshr), they eat and grow consistently for 18 months before shedding their first skin. Once they have shed the Light Blue skin of their youth, they don the pale grey or white skin of adulthood, and almost exactly a year after they are hatched they begin to spin a thick silky nest, in which to lay their one clutch of eggs. After laying this nest of between 300 and 1000 eggs, they continue to spin silk for the remainder of their lifetime.
Additional Information
Domestication
Easily moved and contained, these creatures are not truly smart enough to be domesticated. However when well fed, and kept warm and safe they will happily produce thousands of yards of silk in a year.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
Often raised in large wicker or wooden domes, these insects are able to produce vast quantities of high strength silk, so long as they are well fed and feel safe.
