The Children of the Abyss

The Children of the Abyss

The Children of the Abyss is a small religion that only a very few hoomans follow, due to their beliefs in the power of the void and the abyss.
Despite their name, the group are welcoming to new believers and will gladly discuss with people curious about their beliefs.
They are mostly seen wearing traditional navy blue or purple hooman robes as well as dark grey masks with stars and swirl patterns on.

Cosmology

While a lot of their concepts overlap with The Songs of the Stars, the Children of the Abyss believe that the void are much more powerful than the stars, and that the hoomans will be returned to the void, just as the stars will.

THE VOID & THE ABYSS

The Void and The Abyss are interchanged a lot when spoken about by The Children of the Abyss, though there is still a few differences between the two.   The Void is seen as a peaceful, quiet place, where the hoomans will finally be able to rest, instead being a punishment to hoomans who've passed on.   The Abyss is seen more as a being and the source of extra-dimensional phenomena, being extremely powerful. It can't be controlled, but theoretically there is the idea that it can be encouraged to have it's power used in specific ways requested.

THE STARS

The Children of the Abyss still believe that the stars are powerful, however they are of less importance in their beliefs. The stars are still used for some predictions and the followers will use Star Boxes.

Other Beliefs

Void & Star Spawn

The Children of the Abyss believe in both the concepts of Star spawn and Void spawn, being Hoomans that have been given are blessed with extraordinary abilities by the Stars and the Abyss respectively.

Reception

The Children of the Abyss are seen as heretics, and are shunned by those who strongly believe in The Songs of the Stars.
It's also not seen as an official religion by the Hooman government on Homeworld, Nasgovia or Saeta.   The Homeworld branches are also in hiding from the Eidolon Administration due to their beliefs and general distrust of Eidolon's status as Leader.

Structure

The Children of the Abyss are a mainly decentralized organisation as it is easier to run in a number of smaller groups, though they will meet up for more important ceremonies and events.   They have a number of ranks a believer can be promoted to, which is dependant on their work and how long they've actively been part of the group.
  • Believer - Believers are just people who follow the ideas and concepts of The Children of the Abyss. They don't necessarily have to be an active part of the group and don't have an official title to go by.
  • Newcomer - Newcomers are believers that have officially joined The Children of the Abyss recently.
  • Emissary - Emissaries are followers who are in charge of spreading the words of The Children of the Abyss, as well as the first point of contact for newcomers to talk to if they are interested in joining.
  • Scholar - Scholars are in charge of recording events and ceremonies for the group, updating other branches of what they've been up to. They are also in charge of finding and preserving information relating to the void and the abyss.
  • Oracle - Oracles are the heads of The Children of the Abyss and a expected to keep things running smoothly. They are seen to for wisdom by the lower ranks, and are also in charge of officially promoting believers.
While not official ranks, there are still recognised titles such as:
  • The Whispered - The Whispered are followers who have experienced the "Call of the Void", having been spoken to by the Abyss.
