Neias Udûmhirei (neh-ee-ahs oo'hym'heeray')

ǎtsěftě u (a.k.a. Neius)

Neias, was one of the leaders of the hybrid revolt under Daervulen Bahrlethier, and participated in the subsequent fight for leadership. However, he intentionally threw the battle as, despite what his backers wanted, he had no desire to be involved in government work. Instead, he took a post as a Village Preparer, now spending his time traveling around the kingdom and wider continent.

Name Derivation

His name is derived from the one he held while under the authority of demons, ǎtsěftě u, meaning 'stun' or 'surprise' plus '16'. During his time in the demonic army, he was used as a member of the stealth troops, attacking the enemy at unlikely moments. After leaving, he, like many other hybrids, used elven grammar to change their name. He began with ne-ǎtsěftě u, meaning 'stunner 16'. Through repetition, this became 'ne-atsfte u' and then 'neiasu', then 'neias'.   Like many elves, his last name come directly from the clan with whom he shares blood, although in his travels, he rarely uses it. 'Dûm' translates to tonuge or language and comes from the elvish saying 'a tongue opens more doors than a lock'. This is a nod to his work in stealth and espoionage. The 'û' transforms the word into an adjective and 'hirei' is his clan, leading to a rough translation of "tougue-ed one of the Hirei".

Personal history

Born into the demonic breeding program, Neias, then named ǎtsěftě u, was taught from the moment he could walk to hold a weapon and fight. His generally smaller size in comparison to his fellow demon-elf 'siblings' along with results of placement tests meant he was ordered to join the spy and stealth troops training program. All 'children' went through the same training until they were about fifty years short of maturity. It was during this time that he met and befriended dae'vulh, later known as Daervulen Bahrlethier. The two were separated into differing 'classes', but secretly remained in contact with one another during their training.   His first deployments were centered around gathering intelligence regarding angelic camps and provision movements, then reporting back to his superiors. He only fought directly when discovered, but used his stealth training to flee and hide rather than engage in open combat. However, the head of the stealth corps wanted her troops to be effective even on the battlefield and began teaching them highly destructive magic. Knowledge that Neias and those like him had these skills was closely guarded and only those within the unit, and the command units were aware.   Hybrids were used to command groups of other hybrids, under the direction of demonic generals and Neias worked under Daervulen's direction for some of his missions.   During the final battles of the angelic-demonic war, the stealth troops were instructed to openly use their abilities. While not directly responsible for the demons' victory, the stealth troops became famous for their shock tactics. However, after the war was won, he, along with the other hybrids, were thrown out as now useless abominations.   For about fifty years, he tried wandered from town to town, trying to find a place and determine which elven tribe he belonged to. Upon learning this, he went to them, hoping for a home. They were distrustful and kept him at a distance, but other hybrids who had begun living with the elves helped him learn their culture and how to assimilate. Through this, he settled into the clan, but found himself always wandering and took a job as a Village Preparer. This allowed him to benefit his new 'family' while also using the skills he had learned throughout his life.   Through this constant travel, he met many other hybrids and people oppressed under the demons' rule. He heard the rumblings of revolt, but kept out of it until his own clan grew restless. They had heard of others attacking demonic town and raiding, about the new head of the Lethier clan leading a group of elves and hybrids into battle. But most importantly, he heard of them winning.   The leader of his clan charged him with investigating the claims and this was when he once more met Daervulen in person, his name changed from when they had last spoken. Now, he was the father and monster of the Lethier, depending on what version of events one was listening to. He brought this information back and his clan's leader decided she would join the growing revolt, sending Neias ahead with alliance terms.   His clan joined the growing rebel army and he settled into leading their own stealth troops, gaining their loyalty even as he was reminded over and over of his former commander's brilliance in battle and he encouraged his troops to see Daervulen as their leader as well, not himself alone.   Between his battle knowledge and communication abilities learned through his Village Preparer experiences, he helped bridge gaps between angels and elves, and among the elven clans, becoming an advisor as well.   He saw the final battle at the demonic capital and was fully prepared to step down as leader. Battle made sense, but settled politics was not for him. The closest he would come was to remain in an advisory role. However, his stealth troops backed him for leader and he reluctantly entered the hybrid fight.   In the end, he threw the match early, making the battle look as real as possible and losing to Daervulen who knew immediately what his comrade was doing. When the combat ended and the leader was chosen, Neias encouraged his troops to give their loyalty to Daervulen as the man who had ultimately led the revolt to success. He knew his friend would need military power and loyalty to establish full control and swore personally to him in the even there was any infighting. This public promise pulled his troops fully into the fold of loyalty not to the state, but to the new leader.   Despite much protesting from his friend, Neias returned to his life of wandering as a Preparer, although in secret, he acts as a spy and surveyor for Daervulen. He still commands some very secret troops, an informal spy network that operates all over the kingdom, and every so often returns to the capital under the guise of simple friendly visits. Few in court believe he relinquished all authority, but on paper he has none. Only Daervulen and the highest of the stealth troops know he still maintains regular contact and leads his unit for the good of his ruler, not the nation.
