The Code Legal
Below is a high-level outline of various crimes and punishments for said crimes. Obviously, every crime can't be listed here, so this just a general listing. While some town/cities/areas might be more harsh or lenient when dealing out sentences, this scale is generally accepted throughout the land as "fair." Additionally, most of these punishments assume "first-time" or "one-time" offenses. Committing a crime more than once or committing multiple crimes at once can elevate a punishment to higher tiers. Lastly, attempting to commit a crime is generally viewed, in the eyes of the law, the same as if the crime was actually committed.Tier I: Crimes Against the Nation
These are pure evil acts and crimes that typically can lead to war (which can put a great number of lives at risk and devastate an area) or crimes that can threaten the nation (or the entire world).
- Assassination
- Circumventing Justice (e.g. Fleeing/Avoiding Capture, Breaking Out of Prison, etc.)
- Soulless Conduct
- Military Desertion Before or During Battle
- Mass Murder
- Performance of the Dark Arts (e.g. Summoning an Evil Entity)
- Treason/Rebellion/Espionage
- Using Magic on a Head of State Without Consent
Punishments
- Forfeiture of lands, titles, possessions
- Prolonged torture
- Execution
- Dismemberment
- Possible punishments levied against guilty party's family/loved ones/associates
- Cursing the guilty party's soul to eternal unrest
- Any of the punishments from any of the lower tiers.
Tier II: Unforgivable Crimes
These are highly serious crimes that have a permanent effect on a victim's physical and/or mental well-being and/or livelihood, and possibly also on a victim's family's mental and/or physical well-being and/or livelihood, or could have a great negative effect on a large part of society.
- Conduct Detrimental to a Safe and Civilized Society
- Kidnapping
- Military Desertion In Times of War
- Murder
- Using Magic on a Noble, Official, or Authority Figure Without Consent
Punishments
- Forfeiture of lands, titles, possessions
- Flagellation
- Execution
- Possible monetary fines levied against guilty party's family/loved ones/associates
- Any of the punishments from any of the lower tiers.
Tier III: Major Crimes
These are more serious crimes that can have lasting effect on a victim's physical and/or mental well-being and/or livelihood, or could have a noticeable effect on a significant part of a society.
- Arson
- Battery (e.g. beating someone into unconsciousness, breaking someone's arm, etc.)
- Bribery
- Criminal Business Action (e.g. Money Laundering, Embezzlement, etc.)
- Extortion
- False Testimony to Authoritative or Judicial Personnel
- Illegal Drug Distribution
- Lawless Conduct
- Military Desertion In Times of Peace
- Negligence Resulting in Great Harm or Death
- Smuggling
- Thievery/Robbery/Fencing
- Using Magic on a Citizen Without Consent.
- Wanton Destruction of Property of Significant Value
Punishment(s)
One or any combination of the below:- Fine (minimum 50gp, maximum 500gp)
- Extended jail sentence (from 3 months up to life in prison)
- Flagellation
- Monetary reparations (up to the value lost)
- Punitive Labor
- Any of the punishments from any of the lower tiers
Tier IV: Minor Crimes
These are small crimes that temporarily have mild negative effects on a victim's physical and/or mental well-being and/or livelihood, or mild negative effects on a small part of a society.
- Assault (e.g. Punching someone once in the face, shoving someone over a table)
- Illegal Drug Use/Possession
- Negligence Resulting in Minor Injury
- Poaching
- Trespassing
- Unruly Conduct
- Vandalism
Punishment(s)
One or any combination of the below:- Community service
- Public humiliation
- Fine (1gp-10gp)
- Short prison sentence (1-30 days)
- Flagellation
- Any of the punishments from the lower tier
Tier V: Frowned Upon, But Not Illegal
These are acts of less-than-decent behavior and are associated with uncouth individuals, but the acts tend to lack any significant malicious intent. These acts typically result in personal inconveniences, hurt feelings, anger, or resentment - all of which are relatively minor, but can be catalysts for more significant crimes.
- Adultery
- Gambling
- General Mischief
- Public Intoxication
Punishment(s)
One or any combination of the below:- Warning, and/or stern lecture
- Public declaration of dishonor
- Officially entered into the records as "Disturber of the Peace"
