Milo Windby

Milo Windby

Milo was born to tender loving parents of a small halfling fishing village on an island near Eborica. Early on in his life it became clear that he had a sharp mind, and so, often found himself getting in trouble in school as the lessons failed to capture his interest. It was apparent from early on that there was a direct correlation between his level of boredom and the ensuing level of shenanigans.   His parents saved up for years of his childhood and upon his 18th year they finally secured him placement at the prestigious Klaederth, Academy on the exotic Island-state of Syvathe, colloquially known as the "Isle of Wonders".for its magic colleges, museums and other esoteric institutions. Even the Architecture of Syvathe was noteworthy, for the Island city was built on Brobdingnagnian ancient ruins which still lie here and there around the overgrown Island.   In the years that followed he found a knack for the arcane, and instinctively found long-forgotten paths of studies incorporating ways to administer admixtures to basic evocation spells to produce altered affects: where some students produced flames, Milo could produce sparks, ice, or even acids, calling upon an encyclopedic knowledge of the elements. This talent secured his path into the school's hallowed fraternity of evokers.   Although he still showed astonishing talents, he never outgrew his early childhood propensity for troublemaking. He would often be reprimanded for sneaking out after curfew and causing trouble amongst the other fraternities of the school as well as engaging in the centuries-old rivalries with the other magical colleges and institutions upon Syvathe.   He has reached the point in his education with the Academy that he must be sent into the world to bring back new knowledge for the school to complete his education and give back to the school. This path finds him striking out to seek new discoveries and artifacts and studying their properties.

Milo is a young Halfling wizard who is a student at the Klaederth Academy. He is currently on his year-errant, sent out into the world as a researcher of ancient civilizations and magical phenomenon.

The Keep on the Mysterious Isle
16 Pharast, 537 Era of Men

16 Pharast, 537 EM   As we sail away from the isle more questions than answers swirl in my head. We knew the Cult of the Starseed had been there, but I did not expect to find such destruction, death, and pain.   It seemed like just about every creature, living or dead, seemed to be affected by the remnants of, or perhaps the act of creating, this 'Starseed', the wispy blue otherworldly substance that we keep finding in the wake of the cult. there was a cow and a halfling in the main fort that seemed to have been driven mad and either killed and kept animated, or at least had lost grasp on who or what they were. The fort above ground looked like a gruesome slaughter had taken place. Both the bodies and the building showed signs of blade and spell, all that remained of the inhabitants was blood stains and corpuses. We climbed the tower up to the beacon, finding more of the same until we reached the top. Here we found the arcane lighthouse beacon broken and pulsing its eldritch energies out into the room. I attempted to use a scroll of mending to repair the beacon to no avail. We spotted what appears to be a magical lute which shows faint signs of potential intelligence. I asked it for consent before we grabbed it and fled the beacon's presence.   Next we descended into the dungeon below the keep. initially we found what appeared to be a fairly standard armory, trade supplies, and a moldering larder. As we proceeded deeper into the complex the walls went from smooth to more rough worked stone. We came across a desecrated shrine to Erastil, I touched the broken idol and was overcome with a vision, that I can assume was sent to me from Erastil himself, of the horrors that took place here, and that gloom weighed over me for the many hours.   We proceeded deeper into the caves and found ourselves in what appeared to be a nursery. as we inspected the room a pair of animated corpuses emerged from the thickest of the Starseed's miasma. We managed to dispatch them in fairly short order. when we explored the room further we found a scrap of a note "Beyond the veil lies salvation." and a journal from the Cultists outlining their intention to "Take the precious cargo." I assume meaning the children as we have found no children among the dead. Mr Pea noted a branch of the Starseed appeared dead, near its base he found a glass bottle with sea salt crystals on its rim. One of the passageways in the cave appeared to have suffered a cave in, and upon inspecting the rubble we thought we heard scratching, thinking that it could be a survivor we ran over to the rubble, only to be greeted by a pair of otherworldly beasts. Resembling paper skinned lions, with a blueish hue and... tentacles? As we dispatched the first two, we heard sounds of more digging through the rubble, feeling fairly exhausted from the days events so far, we deemed retreat as an appropriate action. Mr Pea grabbed me and carried me, much to my displeasure, back to the entry to the catacombs. We locked the gate behind us and withdrew to the ship to rest and gather our thoughts.   Some 10 hours later we ventured back into the catacombs. The beasts appeared to have withdrawn back to where they came from for the time being. Our first stop was the desecrated shrine of Erastil, where Mr Pea used his magics to restore the idol to its whole state, this releaved the affect that I had experienced from the day before, and restored my mood back to my normal self.   We next explored a passageway to the north. Here we found another room overrun with Starseed. The room appeared to have served as a makeshift hospital ward of some sort, cots and used supplies strewn about among the Starseed. While we took in the sight of the room more of the animated corpuses again emerged from the miasma and lunged to attack us. They took their pound of flesh, but we managed to put them down. We noticed what appeared to be an intact supply cabinet that had not been ransacked yet. As I approached the cabinet, it lunged at me! suddenly I was facing down what I had only ever read about, a Mimic! Quite fascinating, but also terrifying, the rows and rows of teeth and its large, glue covered, tongue lashed out at me. Just as it revealed its self, Mr Pea yelled something about being right back and just freakin' ran out of the room! How unusual. Mei and I laid attack after attack on this foul beast, it managed to get me in its glue once or twice, but I managed to twist away before it could really cause me great harm. Mr Pea re-emerged wielding, were they javelins?, he threw one, missed and tossed the rest and charged into the fray. We managed to put the beast down, working as a pretty well organized team.   Beyond this chamber we found a small clear pool of water, purified sea water seeping through the stone of the island. I went out on a limb, gathered a handful of the water and splashed it on the nearest Starseed. The water appeared to kill off the growth. I came back to my comrades drinking of the water and praising its seemingly magical affects. At first I was unsure if this was a good idea, but soon realized that everyone was doing it, so I might as well join in. I must admit that the water did seem to bolster my physical strength.   Next Mr Pea and Wei pointed out that we walked past a very ominous doorway and chamber yesterday near the nursery, so we returned there, I must admit that in my fog from the desecrated altar I must have missed it. We entered and the room appeared to be the den of a large spider, we cautiously entered the room, and were soon set upon by the very beast we feared. We fought with her for quite a while, and she caused me a grievous wound just before Mr Pea smashed the life out of her. Just as Mr Pea turned to offer me some healing magics, through the door came more of those unnatural feline beasts. Mr Pea threw a bolt of magic past them out the door and the floor burst alive with writhing grasping vines we fought off the first set of beasts and the remaining creatures began to trickle in fighting through the vines. Wei and I took turns firing shots at them as they appeared dispatching them one by one until they seemed to dwindle in number and stop all together.   We inspected the chamber in detail, identifying an ornate locked stone door that I was unable to pick, then a small chamber beneath a stone throne. Inside the chamber we found a handful of survivors of the attack on the keep. They thanked us for freeing them and pointed us to where the key for the door might be, but warned us that last they knew the leader of this group of cultists had gone through there and locked themselves inside, warning us that this would not be an easy fight.   We decided that we would return to the ship once more and gather our strength. We tasked our shipmates with keeping a watchful eye on the keep and alerting us of any change.   Another 10 hours passed and we returned to the catacombs, prepared as we could be to confront whomever or whatever was on the other side of the door.   We prepared as best as we could and opened the door. In the room we found 3, dark elves, threatening a poisoner. Next to them was a sinister looking portal, glowing with arcane energy, seemingly building in power by the second. They issued a threat demanding that we keep our distance or they would execute the poisoner. Mr Pea, bless his heart, stepped inside to get a better look, and this was taken as a sign that we would not be taking their bargain. The battle was fast and violent. Mr Pea took the first wound from their leader, a mighty wound it was, I managed to force her retreat with a gout of flames to her face. They attempted to conceal their locations with some supernatural darkness spells, which Mr Pea and I managed to counter with light of our own. Wei Was unleashing a few volleys of arrows before drawing her sword and rushing into battle. I managed to unleash a mighty snowball again directly into the leader's torso, causing her to rethink how threatened by us she was. Right following that I felt a grip of her magic constrain me, as the 'poisoner' charged me and nearly took my entire arm off with one swing, but still I could not free myself from the magical hold. Mr Pea and Wei had dispatched the remaining two dark creatures, I think Mr Pea was nearly removed from this plane himself at one point. Just when things were looking their darkest, a familiar voice echoed through the door to the chamber. It was Prax, coming down to see if he could lend a hand with whatever we were working on down here! He instinctively called out to Erastil, not knowing weather or not he would answer, and he did, a wave of positive energy washed over all of us, reviving our spirits, and bodies. that was enough to turn the tide, Wei lunged forward and dispatched their leader with a mighty stroke of her mighty sword, as she fell I felt her grip on me loosen and I mustered the most acidic ball that I could and flung it at the false poisoner smashing into her face and causing a boiling burning to flow over her face, as she jumped through the now fully charged portal. I briefly thought about following her and finishing the job but truly felt drained and ill prepared to face whatever could have been on the other side. Just before the portal closed, I grabbed one of the thunderstones we found in the cache earlier, and activated it and tossed it in, just to keep whomever could have been waiting on their toes.   From there out the rest of the day was relatively calm. We worked with our crew and the survivors to clear the keep of its remaining useful supplies onto our ship and set sail for Stanton's Bluff to resupply, trade, and seek additional crew.

Inferno II: Electric Boogaloo
12 Pharast, 537 Era of Men

12 Pharast, 537 EM   Here I sit in my very own officer's quarters on a ship. How I got here is the culmination of a wild couple of days.   We first laid eyes on the inn, where Praxkin had pointed us toward in our pursuit of the Azure star and the cultists that attacked my friends on the night of the storm. We carefully entered the ruined inn and had a look around. Aside from a couple vermin within, we otherwise found very little of note inside. That is until we found a secret passage beneath the fireplace. This lead us into a cave system that connected to a facility, this facility was guarded by a couple undead pets, that looked like former ship's crew. During our fight with them, an interesting... person... presented himself to us and offered aid. Slug, he name is, provided us with a safe place to rest and told us about the rest of his family. They have always been cruel to him and left him behind in this place while they proceeded deeper into the cave system to launch 'the ship'. After our rest, Slug showed us around the rooms in this section of the cave, here there were some supplies, tools and digging gear, as well as a coin minting press for counterfeit coins. We took note of the supplies and found within them a curious magical amulet, an artifact that allows the wearer to be more in-tune with the sea. Finally Slug warned us about the blue lights in the next section of the caves, he gave us a jar and said that his family would catch the light in the jar to be safe from their affects. We took the advice of Slug and caught one of the blue wisps in a jar, within this ethereal chamber filled with a creeping miasma and strange flora, we were attacked by some large vermin. During this fight I attempted something heroic, or stupid, but that distinction lies in the results and they were spectacular! I fearlessly leapt across a large pit only to land just behind one of the large vermin, and it did not know I was coming, this allowed me to jam my sword between two of its armor plates and dispatch it back to the earth. as the combat completed we saw a chamber glowing brighter with blue light. I approached with great caution and skill, and as I caught sight of the chamber within there was, what I can only describe, as a porcelain woman. Her white skin was cracked and fractured, and from within she glowed with the same ethereal blue light, and atop her head was a sailors tricorn. Just as soon as I laid eyes on her she turned to face me, despite my deft sneaking, she found me. I quickly retreated to my compatriots, and she proceeded to the edge of her chamber. From there she issued us a warning, not to enter her chamber lest she cause us great harm. There was something she said, about her lost leader, and what I inferred, perhaps love of some sort. I went out on a limb and tested a hypothesis and named Cyclops Bill, informing her that we intended to rid his resting place of the interlopers. This seemed to soften her stoic demeaner. She told us that she did not believe that we could, that we did not appear to have the metal, so I promised her that we would return when we had, and parlay with her further. We proceeded bypassing her chamber, deeper into the caves, where I fell victim to the most devious of traps, despite how careful I was being, not rushing at all. Shortly past there we encountered what I assume was the first of Slug's brothers. I saw Mr P dart off into the darkness, issuing threats and I heard the sound of fighting, as I proceeded forward, maintaining my hiding place, when I next laid eyes on my friend he was lying in a heap on the floor! Wei rushed in to defend him and attempt to render aid, and I knew I could not remain in the back so I ran forward. I spun Mother's ring on my finger, and thought of the colorful dresses she used to wear and channeled that memory into a spell. I conjured a vibrant array of bolts of colorful cloth and the brute was instantly fascinated by them. In that moment Wei and I both landed substantial blows against the foe, felling him. Wei quickly turned her attention to Mr P, returning him to consciousness, thank god. just as he rose, a fowl cave creature descended on us. But our combined might ended its attack as quickly as it began. we caught our breath and searched the chamber. Finding a small horde of gems, and the most curious, some sheet music on the brute. From there we descended down deeper into the cave down what appeared to be a dry well. The chamber beneath was most curious a large chasm, and in the center a stone platform with... and organ, complete with ivory keys, built of what appeared to be all manor of bones. I must admit the arts are lost on me, but thankfully Wei is learned in such things and began to play from the sheet music that we found. She struck an incorrect key and the platform began to crumble. Thankfully she seems to handle pressure quite well, and steeled her self and completed the piece to perfection! This seemed to satisfy the enchantment or mechanism to which a bridge was delivered to us that allowed us to proceed. Next we found several water shoots, in the shape of a human skull, not ominous at all, and determined that they were the only means to proceed. We each chose one and jumped in. We slid and curved and were grasped at by what appeared to be skeletal limbs. In what felt like minutes, but was likely mere seconds, were deposited into a small pool of water. As we gathered our senses and assessed our surroundings we found ourselves in a large cave, a lagoon of sorts. and resting in the water below us was an intact tall ship! I found myself asking if perhaps what we heard of Cyclops Bill and the legend of his lost ship were indeed true! We determined that if there was someone on the ship, they were yet unaware of our presence, we retreated to a small ledge of rock above the pool of water we landed in and took rest for the night, planning on assaulting the ship and whomever remained of Slug's family in a more prepared state. After several hours of rest, I had noted that the cave was filling, albeit slowly, with water and we were going to have to act. we got closer and surveyed the ship and its surroundings, just as we did, we determined that someone on the ship was aware of our presence Mr P slid down a waterfall into the lagoon and Wei most gracefully... floated... down, just as I jumped into Mr P's arms we saw the first of the skeletons coming towards us. From there, the next several minutes can only be described as chaos. Mr P called on his ancestors power and grew in size, we smashed a few skeletons, and then we caught sight of Slug's mother and other brother as they joined the fray. I must have caught some confidence from the day prior as I drew my blade and engaged in the melee, gaining the upper hand on the brother and mother at various points in the combat, preventing them from taking action. I saw Wei at one point draw her impressive, and exotic sword and cleave a skeleton in two, and I witnessed Mr Pea crush one into the deck of the ship. I was grievously wounded at a point but we prevailed against the family and their undead servants. we searched the ship for any remaining threats, only to find the captains quarters complete with quite a sight. Therein lied what I can only assume was the remains of Cyclops Bill and his officers, skeletal though they were, their garb and his eyepatch gave away their station. Before them sat a set of scales, on which was some counterfeit coins and a finely faceted Ruby. Attached to the scales was some sort of mechanism, its function escaped my figuring. We were unsure of what we should do next and decided to spend some hours resting and regaining our strength before proceeding. During the rest Mr P noted that the eyepatch housed a setting for a gem, that looked to match the Ruby on the scales. We took a chance and swapped, deftly, the ruby for another gem in our bag, off setting the scale slightly, I quickly attempted to set the gem in the eyepatch, and I must admit, I faltered. While I fumbled the gem into place, the scales went off balance, Wei set off down into the ship and made some attempt to stop whatever the mechanism was designed to do. I do not know if she was successful or not, but I know that I managed to set the ruby. As soon as I did, Bill's skeletal remains animated, they stood and addressed us. They told us that they had been cursed, stuck in limbo forever attempting to complete a ritual that had been interrupted. He thanked us for freeing him and allowing him rest, for this he granted us his ship, The Inferno, and with what remained of his power, he restored it to a seaworthy state. As we took in the magic restoring the ship we noted that something had caused the cave to become unstable, perhaps the same magic that restored the ship, or what was left of the stasis on Bill was holding it up. Either way the cave was coming down. Thankfully I remember some of the basics of setting a ship to sail and setting the rigging, I pointed Mr P and Wei to task and manned the wheel. We found a gap in the cave wall and navigated our way out, and into the bay below the Inn. A day later we find ourselves back in the port of Stanton's Bluff. We recruited Slug and the Porcelain Lady, who I do not yet fully trust, she seems... off, she introduced herself as Deacon Ployte and has taken up with us. Today we will make our way into town and find if Prax Qin made it back to town alright, as well as seek some crew for our new venture: the ship named: Inferno II: Electric Boogaloo.

The Vine Zombies
8 Pharast, 537 Era of Men

8 Pharast, 537 EM   What an exhilarating day today was! overnight we observed some sort of creature a short distance from our camp, it did not appear to threaten us so we simply watched it through the night, mumbling, and pacing. In the light of day it wandered off to the north and west. We tracked it, Mr. Pea noted the tracks appeared humanoid, through the forest into a salt bog. We got our first look at the creature, a former humanoid, seemingly being consumed by vines and fungus. At first the creature appeared to be a mindless living dead creature, necromancy is such foul magics. Upon closer observation, the creature presented some amount of its former intelligence. I quickly formed a hypothesis regarding the creature that if I made an effort to clear its mouth of the vines that obscured its vocalizations it might have something interesting to share with us. So I took the risk and stepped within the creature's reach, the closer I got, the more I saw desperation and fear in its eyes, and the eyes appeared fully human! Mr. Pea jumped to my aid and began to lift the vines and point out what not to cut. A moment later we had freed enough of the growth from its mouth and it spoke! The creature begged us for help, and that he couldn't resist 'its' influence much longer and that if we killed it he might be freed from its influence, it then lead us to a nearby cave where we found a half-orc, fully consumed by the vines, who promptly attacked us. With incredible grace and precision Wei quickly dispatched this creature. We ventured into the cave and found the source of this calamity, it was a plant! This plant had powerful mind affecting properties and I must say that it got the better of me. I don't remember all of it, but it got its vines on me and they began to probe my eyes, nose, and ears, they must have released some kind of toxin because my mind was foggy. Through impressive efforts of my compatriots we uprooted the plant and desiccated it. This freed the being we followed here from its influence!   He introduced himself as Praxkin, he appeared to be a man of faith, and he provided us unexpectedly interesting information. He had been sent to the north coast of this very island in search of the Azure Seed, something that my new friend Wei is also seeking. The night before he searched a building for the artifact he was abducted by men in blue robes (cultists of the blue star?) and brought to this very cave and left for dead. We brought Praxkin back to the place we camped the night before and we all rested for the evening. Praxkin offered me his final ounce of Devine power to clear the fog from my mind. We asked him to head back to the village and seek additional aid from the townsfolks and we will come find him once we investigate the ruins at the north coast.   I spent the afternoon deep in thought, as the fog lifted I found new clarity of mind and was able to remember many lectures of my studies in Dungeoneering, Geography, and History. I also spent time thinking on the way that Wei moves with such grace, using precision and care to enact precision. I feel that I have already learned some of this from watching her, but I have more to learn.

The Storm
6 Pharast, 537 Era of Men

Here I sit in a cave with two strangers, what a couple of days its been, I lost my last journal, in the storm so I best start anew in these pages. Well lets see, I think it all starts with the storm:   6 Pharast, 537 EM   The storm must have blown in fast as we didn't have time to properly secure the rigging, I was woken in the night as I hit the floor, thrown clear of my hammock in the hold by one of the swells.   By the time I made it to up on deck it was chaos! The rigging was getting blown every way all at once, ropes whipped, and even the mighty mast was creaking and beginning to splinter. Then I saw one of the crew, I think his name was Santon, tangled in a line, seemingly strangled lifeless by it, I knew I wanted to be free of this vessel. What had, until now, been stability and home in a vast open sea was trying to be the death of us, lashing out with its rope tendrils, and wooden splintered spears. I was determined not to let it take me down into the abyss with it. I found a couple other crewmen, gods I don't even remember who they were now, Rolf and Stewart maybe, attempting to unlash one of the shore boats. I made myself useful and undid a few of the tangled knots, they two, larger than I threw the boat into the angry sea and I jumped in after them. The next few hours felt like days, they rowed, and I used one of my simple spells, Mage's Hand to lift water from the hull to attempt to keep us afloat. eventually, close to dawn, we finally made it to shore.   The storm was finally breaking as the sun came up, there was a small fishing village just down the rocky beach. The three of us, without a word dragged ourselves toward the village. I don't remember where they went, but I smelled food, and a halfling's mind is never far from food. I wandered into some kind of Inn, it was packed wall to wall with what must have been towns folk sheltering the storm. I kind Dwarf, who looked like he could use a few hours of sleep greeted me kindly and served me a proper flagon of ale. I don't remember if I even finished it or not before I found a corner and faded into sleep.   A few hours later, after cleaning myself up a bit, I was approached by an exotic beauty and her large muscular friend. She asked me if I knew anything about Ao-Jin, or the Azure Star. I vaguely remember crossing a note in the library, it seemed mostly gibberish at the time, but it mentioned the Azure star and likened it to a blue seed or something of the sort. Interesting. While we were talking a barmaid told us that some suspicious looking fellows breezed through town and left on a ship not 3 days earlier, their robes adorned with blue stars, and she said they were headed off for a place called Eda Rhyne. What unexpected happenstance, perhaps this exotic beauty could be my path to continue the work the Headmaster set me on. Best to stick with them for now and stay on their good sides, as they seem sturdy and capable.   After gathering some information and asking around town for information about the north side of the island, as that's where the berobed men came from. We learned a local legend of a pirate lord who destroyed the northern village and hid his ship and treasure somewhere on the Island. Seemingly thin at first, we then met a young man who carried with him a strange coin that he and his friends found near the ruins of the northern village, and swears that there is more to the legend than just old maids tales.   So off we set, trekking north to see what we can make of this Cyclops Bill, the supposed pirate lord, and figure out just how many eyes he really had, my money is on two, pirates love to boast. The forest proved to be wild and unpredictable, throwing some arcane oozes, some sort of goblinoids, and a curious fey creature, in our path, but has not stopped us yet, but this Island clearly has some unusual secrets and magic to be found. I expect we have not seen the last of that odd fey fellow, and I've made some notes on his magics in my spell book.
