Engrirhold

Emgrirhold, home of the Engrir clan, is located in deep in the mountains below Harginhold. It is a small settlement, primarily known for the breeding of ankheg for their bile, which is used in several mining processes.

Industry and Trade

The dwarven settlement is known for the rich soils it is built on, and the ankhegs that thrive in them. With close to five hundred of these captive beasts, the Engrir ranch is able to supply enough bile for the mining needs of a thousand miners for a year. This is done by importing goats from the surface and them having them roam the mushroom rich soils. The ankhegs have become accustomed to the goats' presence and set up a colony below so they can easily feed on them. When the ankhegs surface, the ranchers tranquilize them before carefully harvesting their digestive fluids.

History

In 59 BKO, Brothram Engrir began farming the local varieties of cave mushrooms. His decendents remained here for generations continuing the tradition, when in 224 OA it was discovered that ankheg bile could be used to quickly soften stone, allowing easier access to the many ores of the mountain. The settlement quickly shifted gear to domesticating the creatures. The village quickly grew as they were able to attrack other dwarves from outside the clan looking for a way to make a decent living without having to risk the hazardous mines.

Newfound Wealth

In 339 OA, the local physician developed an elixir that used the digestive enzymes of ankhegs. This substance can be consumed by those suffering from the early stages of surface-eye, so reverse its effects. Engrirhold being one of the few ankheg ranches, coupled with the closely guarded formula, has given the Engrirs a monopoly on the highly sought-after cure.
