Bremen

Founded by Dwarf prospectors, the sleepy town of Bremen sits on the west bank of Maer Dualdon, at the mouth of the Shaengarne river. Bremen's harbor has frozen, requiring local fishers to haul their boats across the ice to put them in the lake. Visitors without a boat will have to reach Bremen by crossing the river, which is mostly frozen over. Targos, Tremalaine, and Lonelywood are visible from Bremen's docks on clear days.   If Auril's everlasting winter has one benefit, it's that the hardy folk of Bremen are spared the seasonal flooding that threaten the town every spring and summer. That's not to say that the long nights, frigid air, and howling blizzards provide any comfort. They don't.    Twice in the past two months, the residents of Bremen have had to organize search parties for their town speaker, Dorbulgruf Shalescar, and have found him wandering the frozen shores of the Shaengarne in heavy furs and no memory of how he got there. Dorbulgruf, old even amongst Dwarven standards, isn't long for this world. Many locals fear the same is true for the town itself, if Auril's winter does not abate.

Points of interest

Buried Treasures

The inn in Bremen once catered to treasure hunters and whalers alike. Treasure hunters used to pan for gold and gems along the banks of the river in warmer times. With the river completely frozen and the seasonal whale hunts unable to survive in the churning waters of the Sea of Moving Ice, Buried Treasures' hay day is long behind it. Now, the establishment has few, if any, visitors and the innkeeper is eager to provide anything needed to those few souls who grace her doorstep.

Five-Brothers Square

The town square was a novelty draw in warmer times. Five shops ring the square run by five identical brothers who would put on a show of pretending to be the same peddler whenever a traveler made their rounds and gathered supplies or stopped in at the tavern. The brothers' jovial spirits are just as diminished as the rest of Icewind Dale's humor after two years of Auril's frost. Most of the brothers can barely keep their shops open, save for the one that owns the local tavern, inspiring jealousy among his siblings and becoming a paranoid recluse because of it.

Bremen Town Hall

Bremen's Town Hall is more of a relic than a bustling urban hub. The speaker is so old that he hardly leaves his home anymore, other than his confounding midnight wanderings and no trade has passed through Bremen to be taxed in some time. Kept cold and locked, no one has had reason to enter the hall of late.

Architecture

The houses and buildings in Bremen reflect the dwarvish heritage of the town. Most are squat, square, and bare heavy support pillars at each corner. Because high peaked roofs were not common on dwarvish buildings, those in Bremen were added later, resembling pointed witch hats and often laughed about by locals and travelers alike.
