Dougan's Hole

Dougan's Hole is the smallest and most insular of Ten-Towns. Its residents are not fond of visitors, and inbreeding has caused the population to dwindle in recent years. It has also led to often-seen physical deformities, such as small, misshapen ears and pointed teeth.   The town itself is small cluster of dwellings perched on the edge of Redwaters that is too small to support any industry - not even scrimshaw. Ice has buckled the shorter of its two piers, rendering the dock unsafe. The longer pier has two icebound keelboats tethered to it, but they are immobile because Auril's winter has frozen the surface of the lake  for hundreds of yards. Local fishers have hauled their smaller boats onto the shore and resorted to cutting holes in the ice to catch knucklehead trout, which the town depends on for survival. Visitors to Dougan's Hole are often struck by the eerie and vaguely humanoid shapes out on the ice, remaining silent and still as the wind howls around them.

Demographics

Nearly the entire town is comprised of the the same three families of human.

Defences

Dougan's Hole can has no town guard and can muster 12 fighters for a militia with 1 veteran as a de facto leader.

Points of interest

The Twenty Stones of Thruun

The only feature of Dougan's Hole is a ring of megaliths known as the Twenty Stones of Thruun. Standing at the southern edge of town, nineteen of these crudely fashioned stone menhirs are arranged in a rough triangle, with a single stone at the formation's center. No one remembers who built this structure or why; the townsfolk maintain that they were already standing when the founder - Dougan Dubrace - first set up his hut to fish. Scholars have tried to study the origin of the structure's true name, but all they have found are allusions to a creature named Thruun in scraps of old legend. Some speculate that Thruun was a god, while others believe it was a destructive nature spirit bound to the formation by ancient druidic magics.

Architecture

The few houses of Dougan's Hole are squat, square, and drafty. Roofs are covered completely in snow and eaves sag beneath the extra weight.
