The Sea of Blood
"Daddy, help!" the small boy cried out. A bandit held the small boy by the back of his kimono. The bandit held a short sword and was dressed head to toe in armor. Surrounding him was a band of soldiers wearing a reed-like armor. Behind them all was the Sea of Blood, with the massive Suseki Wall bordering the Moriko Empire. Before the men was a farmer who's cart was filled with various vegetables and rice. The confrontation stood near the banks of the Sea near the Kasumi Forest.
"Didn't you hear us old man? Give us the goods or give us the gold!" the bandit captain shouted, "It would be a shame for your boy to take a swim now wouldn't it?" The captain stepped closer to the Sea, standing up onto a rock and dangling the boy over the blood red water.
"Please! I'll give you the goods but leave my son alone!" the farmer shouted.
"Sure thing old man. You heard him boys!" the bandit captain turned to his men and they lept to the cart tearing it apart. As the men started hauling the goods away, the captain gave a smirk and dropped the boy towards the water. The old farmer let out a cry as he watched his boy fall towards the deadly sea.
Both the farmer and the captain were met with silence. Both blinking in disbelief. The water was not that quick to act. Standing just off the shore a man with a long brimmed reed hat stood up, the farmers son in hand. His kimono was a orange-red on the lower half and white on the top. The mysterious man bore no weapon.
"Hey what the he-" the captain was interrupted but a kick with a wooden sandal to the stomach. The captain fell backwards and with a splash landed in the Sea of Blood. All of the bandit's men turned to see the mysterous figure having knocked their captain into the sea. It was shortly followed by the grown man's screams of pain.
Turning to see the captain, his skin was boiling away exposing the flesh underneath. Blood poured from opening wounds spilling into the water. He attempted to crawl ashore when a wooden sandal met his forehead and knocked him back into the water. The bandit flailed and soon fell silent. Not a soul was going to go after him, they had all frozen in horror.
The bandit troupe dropped what they were carrying and ran down the road when the mysterious person turned towards them. Soone all that was left in the road was the farmer, his son, and the stranger. The wood sandaled monk made his way towards the forest.
"Thank you stranger! What is the name of the man who saved my son?" the farmer called after him. But the stranger did not answer and continued into the woods until he was out of the farmer's sight.
"Dad did that fox have more than one tail?" The father was confused, there hadn't been a fox.
"Son, I'm not sure what you are talking about. There wasn't a fox."
"Yes there was. Just before that bandit almost dropped me in the sea I saw a fox running from the forest. I swore it had three tails!"
The farmer looked towards the forest where the stranger had gone. Perhaps the rumors of the forest were true.
