Origin

We know that Swallowed are not a natural occurance. They are created through prolonged influence of the Fog on the mind of its victims. This is most prevelent with us, as the inhabitants of Ignotas, especially those practicing the Warder profession but can also affect other monsters and creatures, making them even more ferocious.

How a Swallowed is created

There are two major ways one might turn into a Swallowed. One of them being the before mentioned "Warder"-way, where you use your Warding Light to dispose of the Fog, subsequently having to fend off its hightened properties in your own mind. Warders go through rigorous training to not let the Fog leave lasting effects on them. The second way is for you to come into direct contact with a Swallowed. They carry the effects of the Fog with them and should they ever get a hold of you, will breathe this compressed magical property into your mouth, starting the same process Warders feel.

Physical Differences

It is very easy to tell apart Swallowed and normal people, but what we want to know is what exactly is the different changes their body makes when turning into one.

Visual Differences

The longer a Swallowed is affected with their condition, the more inhumane they become. It starts with their skin turning a slight blue color and ends in them growing more limbs, getting ever more beast-like and ferocious. The blue tint stays while they rot from the inside out, slowly generating a new body, more sturdy and battlehardened than before.

Once a transformation is started, there is hardly a way to halt or reverse the effects.

Behaviour

Swallowed are, once past the initial turning stage, mindlessly attacking anyone that is not a Swallowed themselves. So not only do they fight soulkind on sight, but also other monsters and beasts. How they fight however, is one of the more interesting things about them.

Fighting Swallowed

The Turned are often found in smaller groups of up to ten. They seem to collaborate with each other to fight other species. While it seems like their primary goal is to kill, this is not the case. Swallowed only truly kill if they deem the opponent too powerful to subjugate and are unable to turn them into one of them. Thus the best way to fight Swallowed is either in silence or quickly enough for them to realize they can not turn you.

Communication

The Turned Ones have their own way of communicating. While it is hard for us to understand, the closest we can approximate their language is a mix between a crickets leg rubbing, only that they use their teeth instead, and the mechanics we developed and called the Glyphs of Communication. They seem to generate waves we are unable to detect through normal means using their teeth to convey all kinds of things. While we couldn't detect any emotional changes in a Swallowed's body, we are well on our way to find out more of them as we go.
