Artificer

Masters of invention, artificers use ingenuity and magic to unlock extraordinary capabilities in objects. They see magic as a complex system waiting to be decoded and then harnessed in their spells and inventions. You can find everything you need to play one of these inventors in the next few sections.

Artificers use a variety of tools to channel their arcane power. To cast a spell, an artificer might use alchemist’s supplies to create a potent elixir, calligrapher’s supplies to inscribe a sigil of power, or tinker’s tools to craft a temporary charm. The magic of artificers is tied to their tools and their talents, and few other characters can produce the right tool for a job as well as an artificer.

History

The idea of an artificer was originally introduced into the world of Illicid during the late 2nd Age when gnomes were first discovered throughout the world. The curious nature of the gnomes had led many of their kind to explore the relationship between mudane objects and magic, a study which eventually led them to discover how to imbue effects into such mundane items.

At the onset of the 4th Age, with the ability to magically enchant items having been erased from memory at the culmination of the Great Schism, the art of imbuing arcane magic into a mundane object became a very rare and powerful comodity. Many countries took different approaches to Artificers. Some places called their art an evil and attempted to eradicate Artificers, others enslaved Artificers to provide them with such magical power, and still others decided on lawful regulation of such an art.

Legality

The legality of the Artificer's profession differs from country to country. Most free Artificers are found throughout Merboitha, a country which decided to take a regulatory stance on the ability to imbue items with arcane magic.

Conversly, Artificers are outlawed in countries such as Brynn, Ugar, Acharcia, and Alraneth, where they are either imprisoned or simply killed on sight.
