Oracle of Zelphus

The Oracle of Zelphus is a famous powerful fortune teller, with special abilities given to them by Savras, God of Divination. The power of the Oracle is passed from person to person. A new person is called when an Oracle dies.

Appointment

When one Oracle dies, a mysterious force selects another host. Green smoke pours from the dead Oracle's mouth and into the mouth of a potential host. The potential host's eyes turn into an hourglass shape as voices of all of the previous Oracles speak through them in unison and say "Do you accept the gift?" 
The potential host then has the opportunity to say yes or no. If they say yes, they become the new Oracle of Zelphus and gain all of the prophetic abilities. 
Their eyes become a more striking color and they gain a familiar with a matching eye color. Every Oracle of Zelphus can look through the eyes of their familiar.

Responsibilities

Typically, if the Oracle marries, their spouse becomes the Lord or Lady of Zelphus, taking on the political responsibilities of the town. If the Oracle is single, they usually handle these matters themselves.

History

The Oracle of Zelphus started when Savras gave the gift of prophecy to the First Oracle in 526 1E.
In 532 1E, the Oracle's Tower was built so that the Oracle would have a place to hold readings. 5 years later in 537 1E, the town of Zelphus was built around the tower.
In 571 1E, when the First Oracle died, the people of Zelphus thought her gift might go away forever. However, Daphina Whistlebottom inherited her abilities. The people thought that it was a miracle and treated Daphina like a Queen. 
When Daphina died in 953 1E, Azariah became the Oracle. She was a very competent Oracle and lasted hundreds of years, being an elf. Azariah's death was seen as a great tragedy. 
In 321 2E, Frodo, son of Eskel became the Oracle.
When Frodo died in 34 3E, the title was passed to Sybil Fortuna.
