Undead War
In 311 E, a great horde of undead swept out of the eastern Wasteland. Over the next 4 years, the empire battled these creatures, but never discovered where they were coming from or what was creating them.
When the enemy first appeared, vast numbers of skeletal creatures swarmed out of the desert. The border outpost of Fort Marin was quickly surrounded by the enemy but the undead moved on, pushing quickly towards the open the grasslands east of Salindar. This area produces the vast majority of the livestock and grain consumed in the empire and the loss of farmers and cattle in the early days of the war, deeply wounded the empire.
Two Imperial Legions were quickly dispatched from Illyria and Salindar to fight against the hordes, attempting to hold them back and prevent them from reaching Denrin or the major port of Salindar. These legions, at first, had great success and were able to drive the undead back away from more populated lands. Additionally, small strike teams struck out from Fort Marin and attacked the flanks of the hordes, weakening them further. But over time, the legions inevitably lost soldiers in battle and these same casualties later appears as desiccated zombies fighting along side their skeletal enemies. Once again the tide of the War turned and the empire found themselves slowly losing ground to the unending forces of the undead.
As the war dragged on, more of the undead emerged from the Wasteland and surrounded Fort Marin, this time taking up a position around it and preventing the soldiers there from aiding the legions to the west. The Siege of Fort Marin had begun and lasted for the majority of the war.
Then, in 315 E, the creatures stopped coming as suddenly as they appeared. This halt of new reinforcements allowed the empire to push the horde back to the edges of the desert and break the Siege of Fort Marin.
