House Thorne

Origins

The early history of House Thorne began in obscurity. Originally known as the Thornesons, they were paupers living in the outskirts of Elmden, a small settlement far from the hustle of major cities. The Thornesons were a humble family, making a living through craftsmanship and trade, often bartering their skills for sustenance.

The Unyielding Determination

Over the generations, the Thornesons exhibited an innate resilience. When Elmden faced a famine, they led initiatives in preserving food and rationing. In return, the community granted them a small piece of land. The Thornesons began to till the earth, becoming modest but respected farmers. Their determination became the talk of the town, and the phrase "Thorneson grit" became synonymous with unwavering perseverance.

The Rise of Unlanded Knights

By the time of Brendol Thorne, the family had accumulated modest wealth, and Brendol aspired for more than just being a farmer. He trained as a squire under a local lord and eventually earned his spurs, bringing honor to his family name. The Thornesons, now referred to simply as "Thorne," became renowned unlanded knights, selling their martial skills to lords in need of protection.

Abalarder's Legacy

Born to the tradition of knighthood, Sir Abalarder Thorne was a paragon of chivalry and valor. His vanquishing of the Bronze Dragon Brondharn was the stuff of legends, earning him immense prestige. For his heroism, vast tracts of land in Hollow's Field were granted to him. Sir Abalarder, reflecting on his family's humble origins, dedicated his life to the protection of the common folk, ensuring that Hollow's Field flourished.

Stewards of Hollow's Field

For ninety years, the Thornes remained steadfast protectors of Hollow's Field but were not directly involved in its governance. This changed when Isolde Thorne, Abalarder's granddaughter, was unanimously elected as the Duchess of Hollow's Field, marking the beginning of House Thorne's official reign over the city.

The Protectorate Era

Under the leadership of House Thorne, Hollow's Field experienced a renewal. Roads were built, trade flourished, and the arts were patronized. House Thorne maintained a unique balance, honoring their knightly heritage while also fostering a sense of community. Their motto, "From Soil to Summit," served as a constant reminder of their rise from paupers to protectors, instilling hope and ambition in every citizen of Hollow's Field. Hollow's Field is now ruled by Duke William Thorne, Abalarder's great-grandson.
