Burchard Brockhouse

Burchard Elwin Brockhouse (a.k.a. Burch)

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Burchard is relatively fit and thin for a halfling. He attributes it to being on his feet and all over town all day every day.

Facial Features

Burchard has an abormally large nose and a scar on his left cheek from an old injury

Apparel & Accessories

Burchard dresses very plain for someone of his title. His clothing is specially designed to be durable and allow him to work around town however needed. He carries a monacle that allows him to read clearer.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Burchard was born and raised in Mudvein to Hubert and Tabitha Brockhouse. Burchard grew up shadowing the many Townmasters of Mudvein over the years, as an unofficial assistant. Interacting with everyone in town brought great satisfaction. Eventually, when one of the townmasters retired, Burchard felt ready to run himself. He lost the election the first time he ran, but won three years later. Since then, he has been reelected twice.

Education

Burchard has no formal education. Everything he knows he learned shadowing other townmasters. While he isn't particularly intelligent, he knows enough to do his job to the satisfaction of the town he serves.

Employment

Most of Burchard's career has been either as an assistant to the townmaster, or as the townmaster. He has worked small jobs, usually as a day laborer, when needed, just to earn some extra coin.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Burchard considers his repeated election to townmaster to be his biggest achievement.

Failures & Embarrassments

Burchard's role as townmaster has been fairly successful. There have been some mistakes along the way. One of the most notable was his decision to remove a retaining wall which led to the collapse of two houses into the waters of Lake Cancour.

Intellectual Characteristics

Burchard is always very busy and easily distracted. He always has something on his mind and has a terrible habbit of letting it wander. If he considers a conversation to no longer have useful value, he has a tendency to move on to the next task. That isn't to say he doesn't care. When problems arise, he does give full attention when and where needed.

Morality & Philosophy

Burchard's morality can be reduced down to the idea of "fairness". Every decision is hinged on the idea of being fair for all, or fairest for the most. In situations where neither party can agree, Burchard will split the difference move on without a second thought.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Burchard desires little more than to see Mudvein become something better than it is right now. He's lived his whole life there, and spent most of it serving and bettering the town. Matters of other towns don't bother him, unless it directly affects necessary trades.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Most who know Burchard well are impressed at how well he knows every person in town. He mentally keeps track of the strength and weaknesses of the towns residents and uses that to effectively organize and manage their public works. This skill does come with a downside, though, as Burchard has long struggled to connect on a deeper level, even with those he considers close.

Likes & Dislikes

Those who meet Burchard immediately notice how much he likes to work. He's always busy working on something, or thinking about the next thing. While he does understand most people do not match his level of drive and passion for work, he does have a strong dislike for laziness and ineptitude.

Virtues & Personality perks

While he is a very busy man, he always finds the time to stop and listen to whoever needs to speak with him (though sometimes he gets distracted if the conversation drags on too long). Burchard doesn't see him self as above any of his fellow townsfolk, but merely as one of them.

Vices & Personality flaws

Burchard has a hard time saying no to requests from Mudvein's residents. This can lead to long wait times for important work as all but the most critical issues are handled in the order received. The only exception is requests made by those who Burchard, or the town, owe a favor. Those often get prioritized when possible.

Hygiene

While Burchard takes care of himself, he has no problem getting down and dirty in his day-to-day work. It's not uncommon for him to have a lair of mud on him at the end of the day.

Social

Reign

Burchard is currently serving his third term as Townmaster of Mudvein. He has no intentions of ending his service in this position any time soon, intenting to run for re-election until he is no longer physically able to keep up with the job.

Social Aptitude

Burchard is one of the most extroverted people in town. He will converse naturally with whomever needed to complete the days tasks, but never more than needed. He speaks confidently and assertively.

Hobbies & Pets

Burchard owns a pet cat, Sabine, which he keeps in his home. The closest thing to a hobby that Burchard enjoys is a drink at The Mud Flow at the end of a long days work.

Speech

His conversations maintain a polite tone, unless his directions are ignored or forgotten, in which case he adopts a firmer tone. His vocabulary, while sufficient for his work, is limited and he makes no effort to expand it. Swearing is reserved for the biggest of mistakes.

Wealth & Financial state

Burchard is paid 2gp per day for his role. Having few personal expenses, Burchard typically keeps about 200gp in savings. Anything he earns beyond that he will give away to whomever he finds needs it most, usually the poor and hungry.
