This is basically the triggering event for the novel :D So no spoiling anything, but Hélène is going to try to free the emperor so that she can use his "gratefulness"/blackmail him to lift the legal curse on her friend. Meanwhile, the Sanniens are trying to negotiate with the empire. The emperor's soulmates want him to live since their own influence depends entirely on him (and some of them actually like him), but the rest of the government would rather laugh at the Sanniens and just select a new emperor...
