It has been 759 years since the Ikaros Colonial Flotilla brought terror to Kepler 77c
Whether intentionally, by accident, or through some form of horrific sabotage, the outcome remains the same. The first ever planet besides earth discovered to harbour life, some potentially even intelligent, was completely sterilised.
It was a microscopic menace of Earth-Borne bacteria, viruses, and plantlife for which the native life had no defenses that brought this terror. Seemingly all at once, the native life became sickly and began dying out en masse. Within several decades, the planet was transformed.
Humanity's salvation became its graveyard
After ecosystems collapsed, and the settlers were forced to abandon their technology for reasons still lost to time, humanity regressed and dispersed across the now barren edifice of the planet. Over centuries, society redeveloped alongside the spread and colonisation of Earth life, which gradually supplanted the indigenous life, carving out an anaemic, tentative new environment.
It is now the year 500 AGL, and unfortunately the past century of rapid rediscovery and scientific advancement has coincided with a renewed resurgence in our old destructive habits. But while many foolishly seek to exploit and squander the fragile surviving environment, there are also those who seek above all else to learn from our mistakes, to build a brighter future both for this disfigured planet and humanity.
