Melora

The Wild Mother, Goddess of Nature

For more information on all Prime Deities, see: Prime Deities

The realm of Melora extends to wherever the seas shift and the land grows wild. As the Keeper of the Wilderness, Melora represents the wild creatures of nature, the rush of the angry rapids, and the heat-heavy stillness of the desert. Elves worship her, as do hunters, accepting her guidance to exist harmoniously within savage lands. Those seeking safe passage across dangerous waters pray to her to guide them. Followers of Illid also show respect to the Wild Mother as the caretaker of what remains when the Patron of Death's work is done. Druids of Melora the Wild Mother and clerics of her lover, Erathis the Law Bearer, work together to preserve the balance of nature and civilization. However, worship of Melora was outlawed in some of the larger nations, causing disagreement between clerics of Erathis, where many blame poor weather and natural disasters on the ire of their deity's partner.

Physical Description

Immortalized through wooden reliefs and carved idols in hidden, overgrown groves and rural shrines, the Wild Mother is shown as a beautiful woman with green skin nearly swallowed by a wild, tangled wreath of hair, leaves, and vines that dwarf her lithe form.   Another interpretation of Melora portrays her as ever shifting with the seasons. In Spring, she is a newborn child. In Summer, she is a fair maiden, just coming of age. In Autumn, she is a pregnant woman of middle-age. In Winter, she is an aged woman, feeble with wrinkles.

Divine Realm

Eschewing a permanent realm, Melora prefers to wander the planes to oversee natural life. She is often found among the unearthly beauty of Arvandor's infinite expanse of deep woods, hunting unnatural things that corrupt the wilds.

Tenets of Faith

  • Protect the untamed wilderness from exploitation and destruction.
  •
  • Slay abominations and other mockeries of nature.
  •
  • Embrace and respect the savage nature of the world. Exist in harmony with it.

Worshipers

Priests of Melora are rugged folk, more often than not found amongst the working class citizens of agricultural towns, though many are hermits. Men are expected to have long beards and women long hair. Seaweed, natural items, and strands of white cloth are often braided into the hair of the faithful. Formal raiment is usually long robes of sea-green, storm-grey, or sky blue color, decorated with pearls, leaves, and other natural accents.

Holy Books & Codes

"Hymns to the Winds and Waves" is the chief holy text of the goddess Melora. It serves as a guide to natural life, an almanac of tides and such things. It includes susurrant prayers, rules for personal behavior, and the respect of nature.

Divine Boons
  • Minor Boon
Melora grants her guidance while at sea. You are under the constant effects of Know Direction and become trained in Sailing Lore (or another Lore skill if you are already trained in Sailing Lore).
  • Moderate Boon
    ???
  • Major Boon
Melora has blessed you with her wind in your stride. You gain a +30-foot status bonus to your Speeds, and you gain a fly Speed equal to your land Speed.

Divine Curses
  • Minor Curse
Lightning begins to strike twice. You gain weakness 5 to electricity, and any natural or magical bolts of lightning always target you rather than the other creatures around you.
  • Moderate Curse
The current of the waves constantly fights against you, putting you at risk of drowning any time you must Swim. You lose any swim Speed you have, unless it’s your only Speed, in which case you take a –20-foot status penalty to your swim Speed. When you roll an Athletics check to Swim, you always use the outcome for one degree of success worse than the result of your roll.
  • Major Curse
Those who displease Melora are shunned by nature itself. All animals and nonsapient plant creatures are hostile to you, and any animal companion or familiar abandons you. Sapient plants’ attitude toward you begins two categories worse than normal, as something about you seems repugnant to them. While plants and animals might not attack you outright if it’s not normally in their nature to do so when they are hostile, dogs growl at you, cats hiss, and so on.
