Sarenrae
The Dawnflower, Goddess of Compassion
For more information on all Prime Deities, see: Prime Deities
Goddess of atonement and compassion, Sarenrae spreads the message of understanding and optimism in even the darkest of places. She believes that the corrupt can be redeemed, a mindset that led to a betrayal by the Lord of the Nine Hells, who decimated her followers during the War of Repellence. This misplaced trust caused many priests to strike her name from historical records, leaving her title and faith scattered to obscurity for much of the recent age. Only recently has her faith been rediscovered and her temples returned to prominence. The Dawnflower's followers are often rural healers and community philosophers, offering a voice of reason and empathy in angry and cynical times.
Physical Description
Those who bring the Dawnflower's words back to the light unearth her image from ruined temples, or create new art to inspire others with her message. Sarenrae is represented as a beautiful, strong woman with dark skin and light hair, rising betwixt a set of angelic ivory wings.
Divine Realm
Sarenrae guides her people from within her temple beside the crystal beaches of the Island of Renewal, a hidden sanctuary of flame alongside the blessed fields of Elysium.
Tenets of Faith
- Lead with mercy, patience, and compassion. Inspire others to unite in fellowship.
- Aid those who are without guidance. Heal those who are without hope.
- Those who are beyond redemption, who revel in slaughter and remorseless evil, must be dispatched with swift justice.
Divine Goals & Aspirations
Although Sarenrae shares influence over certain domains with other gods, she is neither jealous nor territorial. She could expand her influence by taking a more interventionist role in mortal affairs, thereby accumulating more followers, but she remains somewhat aloof from the world.
Worshipers
At its height, the church of Sarenrae was mostly composed of altruistic priests who were also ready to be stern should it be warranted. The church was known for blessing crops, healing the sick, and reforming criminals and evil doers. They were often consulted to solve feuds and disputes among neighbors and families. A large portion of Sarenrae's priests were composed of clerics, but within their ranks were also paladins and rangers, as well as a few druids and bards. Some priests worked as personal retainers or healers for the wealthy, while others survived on assistance from congregational worshipers. The scimitar was a favored weapon and its use was held in high regard, and it was often decorated with sunburst images in red and gold. In battle, Sarenrae's clerics became dervishes, ready to destroy irredeemable corruption. Formal raiments include a long white chasuble and tunic with red and gold decorations depicting the sun. Worship leaders often wore a golden crown topped by a red-gold sunburst. Knights of Sarenrae identified themselves by wearing white scarves around their helms and wielding the scimitar. They were willing to offer mercy to those enemies who sought absolution and renounce evil. The main temples of the Dawnflower were open-air buildings, although side buildings had ceilings. Many had brass or gold mirrors that refocused the sunlight on the main altar. Priests often traveled from one temple to the next. Church services were held outdoors and were joyous affairs that featured singing, dancing, and music. However, the majority of these temples have fallen to ruin after her decline in worship following the War of Repellence. Kind and caring halflings often worshiped Sarenrae, tending to the sick and elderly. Rarely, a halfling was born with red hair and, as this was seen by halflings as a sign from the goddess, these halflings were expected to become part of Sarenrae's clergy.
Holy Books & Codes
"The Birth of Light and Truth" is the principal holy book of Sarenrae. It is customary for every owner of this book to inscribe their own uplifting stories in the last few blank pages, so that they can be recounted to others later.
Contacts & Relations
Betrayer Deities
During the War of Repellence, Sarenrae and Corellon drew Torog above ground, defeated him, and—with the help of a trap built by Moradin and Sehanine—banished Torog to a portion of the Darklands. Her belief that the corrupt can be redeemed led to a betrayal by the Lord of the Hells that left most of her following decimated. After the Parting, Sarenrae's influence diminished even more, with her ancient temples falling to ruin. In the following centuries, for followers of Sarenrae, religious activity and worship has mostly been private and passed down through tradition rather than centralized at temples and institutionally trained. Sarenrae counts all non-evil gods as her companions, and even communicates with evil deities in the hopes of converting them from their dark ways, although certain tradition-bound deities distrust the Dawnflower and her flock, seeing their willingness to forgive as a weakness. While Sarenrae believes in redemption, she understands that certain beings are irredeemable, including Asmodeus. Sarenrae's hope that their cooperation would lead him to redemption never came to pass, and now she regards Asmodeus as such. Their rivalry goes much farther than their constant battle over souls.Divine Traits

Divine Boons
- Minor Boon
Your healing hands are blessed with a warm flame. Once, when you heal another creature, instead of healing it for the normal amount, you heal the creature to full Hit Points, no matter how much damage it has taken. Sarenrae typically grants this boon in extremely consequential circumstances. - Moderate Boon
Your blade burns the irredeemable. Your attacks deal an additional 1d6 fire damage that ignores fire resistance. - Major Boon
You are a voice of peace and rehabilitation. When you roll a success at a check to Request something, you get a critical success instead. In addition, all creatures other than fiends, undead, and mindless creatures allow you one chance to speak your piece and make requests before entering combat. If you or an ally ever use the time from the request to gain an advantage in an ensuing combat (for example, by casting preparatory spells, positioning for combat, or waiting out your opponent’s preparatory spells), Sarenrae immediately revokes this boon, or possibly curses your ally.
Divine Curses
- Minor Curse
The sun burns you for your transgression. You receive a sunburn that causes you to become permanently clumsy 1. - Moderate Curse
The sun shines its light on everything you say. You become unable to tell lies, and if you attempt to do so, you instead compulsively blurt out the truth on the matter in question. You are still able to withhold information or lie by omission. - Major Curse
Sarenrae restricts your ability to harm others. All attacks you make, spells you cast, and other sources of damage you deal are nonlethal except against fiends and undead, and you can’t ever make them lethal. You deal minimum damage except against fiends and undead. All creatures except fiends and undead gain a +4 status bonus to their AC and saving throws against your attacks and other effects.
