As wretched as they may be, the sunless waters are a natural defense for the archives. We are not the only inhabitants of this realm and need to stay secluded. Our paladins guard the many portals and doorways from other planes to protect us from without. The expanse of dark sea protects us from within. — TBN archivist
Surrounding the Prismata Archives and nearby lands is a vast expanse of sea. No one knows how far it stretches or how deep it runs. Employees are advised to steer clear to avoid accidents. Anyone needing to traverse the sea must be escorted by specialized members of the
Opal Guard.
Inky Expanse
The sun doesn't shine over the sea. It's cast in an eternal shadow and cloak of fog. The water here appears nearly black. Only magical light sources are able to pierce through the void to allow people to see things hidden under the waves. Numerous predators use the dark sea to their advantage.
Other Dangers
This region is prone to various disasters of both physical and arcane nature. Chronic wind and rain storms cause choppy waters, high waves, and lowered visibility. Some archivists believe that a calm sea is more foreboding than its typical state.
There are patches of unstable aether that are difficult to spot or predict where they will appear. They hold a concentrated charge of energy. Anyone who gets too close without the proper PPE and precautions will suffer the effects of the patch discharging its energy stores.
Observed effects from these patches include:
Electrical discharge
A large ball of fire
Poison gas
Altered gravity
Intense nausea
Sudden blindness
